Re: Graceland
I don't know about the actual house but we passed through Memphis this summer on our two week road trip and all I can say is EWWWHHHH It's very, very ghetto over there...I was having anxiety attacks all night because I thought the van would be stolen overnight. And the hotel we stayed in skeeved me massively.
I would maybe check it out but stay in another area of Tennessee. I'm so glad we were jus there overnight and definitely put a two thumbs down over it's name on the map of places to visit ever again.

Re: Graceland
Graceland is pretty cool in that ticky tacky cheeseball way (that I happen to like :D). THere are several exhibits...a car museum, two airplanes and of course gift shops galore, a diner, etc.. You get a package of sorts that gives you an appointment to get the tour. I thought it was pretty interesting. Of course it's guided and you can only walk through certain rooms and not wander around or anything.
I wouldn't stay near the Graceland though...it's in a very run down part of down along a busy road (Elvis Presley Blvd. to be exact..LOL) We stayed at some hotel right across the street from the AutoZone -- it was a Radisson or something like that about 2 blocks away from Beale Street (where all the bars/clubs are) with a TGIFridays in the Lobby. I was with 2 other women and we felt perfectly safe walking around on our own. The Peabody is 'the' hotel to stay in...that's the one with the ducks. It's VERY nice and we wished we stayed there instead of the hotel we chose.
Here's a link to GRACELAND

Re: Graceland
i went with a friend a while ago. It is kind of cheezy, but we loved it. It was interesting to see the house and to see what was considered extravagant in the early 70s. I also got a kick out of seeing all the costumes Elvis wore in his heyday and there is a ton of memorabilia at Graceland. We also toured Sun Studios, ate at BB King's cafe and went to a Blues concert that night. We loved Memphis and had a great time while we were there, especially int he downtown area. If you or DH are music fans, you will probably enjoy it.
I also visited the Civil Rights Museum while I was there and it was really interesting. I dont' remember where we stayed, but it was a place we chose out of the AAA guide. There is a spectacular hotel downtown that has ducks in a pond in its lobby.
ETA: I just saw someone else mentioned it - the Peabody

Re: Graceland
Only at 3am after drinking on our 12 hour layover from Jamica. I have a great picture of me in front of the gates - and briefly recall the guard screaming at me to get away from the gate.

Re: Graceland
I was there! Its so fun!! It is SMALL compared to what people think- but its lots of fun. You expect a big mansion like the celebrities have today, but its not.
WHen I was there, I stayed with a woman's who dad was friends with Elvis (they went to high school together) and there is a picture of him in Graceland. He told me Elvis actually paid more than what they tell you on the tour.
Now I know what Marc Cohn meant in "Walking in Memphis" with "down in the jungle room".
