Grain free dog food?
Last night DH and I adopted a 1 year old yellow lab/mastiff mix from North Shore Animal League. They gave us a free 4lb bag of what he had been eating there (Purina Chicken & Rice) but I will likely change the food and am questioning grain-free. I've found very mixed reviews on line (and expect to get something similar here) but would like to get some personal insight. I know grain-free food is $$$ -- is it worth it? Which brand do you use? The most common/popular names I have come across are Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Merrick, and Innova. HELP!

Congrats on the addition and its so awesome that you adopted!
Blue Buffalo is really good, we have given it to my dog and he always did well on it. We recently switched to Nature's Domain which you can get at Costco. The vet had recommended it and it's a lot cheaper than Blue but all natural. It comes in sweet potato and turkey or salmon meal which smells like a fish tank and made me gag. They are both grain free and only $35 for a 40lb bag

That's what I use. I have two puggles and it lasts me almost 3 months.

Re: Grain free dog food?
We have 2 dogs on Blue Buffalo Grain Free. One has allergies, the other has stomach issues. We have seen a HUGE difference since switching.
My older dog was throwing up almost daily. We kept trying new foods. Nothing worked until we switched to the grain free. He has not thrown up once since we switched.

Grain free dog food?
I feed my dog Orijen six fish food right now- in the past I have fed him Solid Gold wolf king, wellness simple and Blue buffalo. I like the Orijen best since switching to it all of my dog's allergies and tummy issues have almost completely disappeared. If you choose to change your dog's food do it over a couple of weeks.

Grain free dog food?
We feed our beagles Flint River Ranch. It's 100% human grade food with vitamin e as the only preservative. Best part - it's delivered to your door and you can set up automatic delivery. Doesn't cost much more than store brands.

Same, Orijen Six Fish but it's $$$.
We have used:
Canidae Natural Balance Evo Blue Buffalo
But there have been issues with each one. Recalls for salmonella, soft stool on them, one of my dogs was vomiting and drooling for weeks on Blue Buffalo, we just couldn't continue with it. She's doing great on Orijen. I had always read that Blue Buffalo is a great quality but sometimes too rich for some dogs, resulting in stomach or poop issues.
Some sites to do research and reviews:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/
You could also buy a higher end food and mix it with a lower priced good quality food like Kirklands to ease the hurt on your wallet. For a Mastiff/Lab, you'll probably be feeding 2-3 cups a day at least. Do you know how much he weighs? I feed my 80 pound Lab 2 1/2 cups a day.

Re: Grain free dog food?
We recently had to switch to grain free food to accommodate my dog's allergies. Otherwise, I see no real reason to go grain free. We really like Rachel Ray's Nutrish before we switched. Now we give him Blue Buffalo.
