Grammar pros - I have a quick question....
In regards to the placement of the comma in the example below, which one is correct?
#1: By "internal database", did you mean....
#2: By "internal database," did you mean.....
Does the comma go inside or outside of the quotes? I know that if it's a true quote, the comma goes inside (like if you're quoting someone). But not sure if the comma rule applies in all instances.
Thanks!

In this instance, I would say it goes outside of the quotes, b/c the comma is in place to join another thought to the sentence, not the quote.

Re: Grammar pros - I have a quick question....
As per the WWW:
Put commas and periods within closing quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows the quotation.
Put colons and semicolons outside closing quotation marks
Put a dash, question mark, or exclamation point within closing quotation marks when the punctuation applies to the quotation itself and outside when it applies to the whole sentence.
HTH!!

I agree.
The is seperarting the clause: [By "internal database"] from the rest of the sentance.
You could also just say: When you mentioned the internal database, did you mean (or were you referring to) . . .

Re: Grammar pros - I have a quick question....
This came from a Franklin Covey Style Guide:
Commas, like periods, always go inside closing quotation marks. Commas go outside parentheses or brackets.
Commas enclse parnthetical expressions.
Commas (or a comma and a semicolon) set off (enclose) the following transitional words and expressions when they introduce sentences or when they link two complete thoughts: accordingly, consequently, for example, for instance, further, furthermore, howeber, indeed, nevertheless, nonetheless, on the contrary, on the other hand, then, thus.

He's such a nerdy know-it-all! The comma inside the quotes in this case totally looked wrong to me. Guess I need to pick up a good grammar reference book..... Thanks!

I don't need to fix what I wrote; I'm just trying to prove who's right (me or DH).
