Grand opening of the new Nisen Sushi - with Review (a bit long)

DH and I went to the grand opening of the new Nisen Sushi in Woodbury last night. We have been big fans of Nisen, and have been going to their current location in Commack for many years. We were excited to hear that they were opening a second location.

I have to say the new restaurant is awesome. It has a totally different look, feel, vibe, etc. from the original Nisen. It's about 4 times the size, and has such a city atmosphere about it. The new head chef is from Nobu and some other great sushi place that I can't remember.

The menu is completely different too. I didn't see any rainbow rolls, fantastic rolls, northport rolls, etc. that can be found at the place in Commack. They've created so many new ones that are amazing. To list a few: Monkey Junk - very hot, Scottish Goat, Chocolate Beef, TNT, etc. The names alone pique your curiosity.

Their martini menu was quite tempting too, but I stuck with my traditional Sapporo beer. Chat Icon

I also ordered dessert, which I never do when I go for sushi. Even that was fantastic. It was this caramelized pear, wrapped in coconut rice, served with chocolate fondue, and pistachio something on the side. It looked like a tuna roll, and the pistachio was meant to be wasabi, and the fondue to be the soy sauce. It looked like sushi, but was totally a dessert.

I really liked this place because it was so different. Very nice. Actually, the nicest sushi restaurant I’ve ever been to.

Tom, the owner, did it right. He created a second restaurant that will appeal to a whole new customer base, and wont detract from the other long-time followers of the original Nisen in Commack. We’ll still keep going back to Nisen in Commack for great sushi, and treat ourselves on occasion to the new one in Woodbury.

In case you’re curious as to where it is, it’s on Jericho Turnpike, in the same shopping center as Ben’s Deli, Lindt Chocolate, Cold Stone Creamery, etc.

Thanks for the review! I love the original Nisen. Glad to hear they made the new one larger...that is my only gripe about the one n Commack.
