Grandma's dog had to be put to sleep last night
It was so sad. He was having a hard time walking and my mom took him to the emergency vet and they did a ton of tests and they found that he had cancer in his spleen and it was spreading to his brain. They think he had a stroke too. Grandma is so upset and wants another dog but she can barely take care of herself. I dont think she should get another. My mom and I each have dogs and we are thinking of having them spend some time with her during the day while we are at work. If the dogs are used to being alone, do you think they would have a hard time without their alone time?

Re: Grandma's dog had to be put to sleep last night
Erica I am so so sorry for your grandma. What a shame
I can tell you that when Ebony passed away, my sister lent me one of her dogs and that made a huge difference for me. It was a big help....
PS Midnight loved the attention he got from me being home all day! So I think your dog would be fine adjusting - it's kind of like a little vacation!

I am so sorry about your grandmothers pup
2 comments about what to do next: 1 - try to adopt an older dog that is trained & has the skills to become somewhat of a service dog to your grandmother. I know that DHs dog stayed at his house when we got married b/c the dogs was accustomed to taking care of his grandmother & would not leave her. Now they are training their husky to do the same, as her dog is over 13 years old. Also, most senior dogs that are adopted are better in temperment than puppies.
2 - it is proven that people who have pets later in life live longer.

Re: Grandma's dog had to be put to sleep last night
Thanks for the replies. My mom's dog is going to spend the next couple of days at her house and then I think we might wind up getting her a cat since they are lower maintenance than a dog. My mom and I may go to North Shore Animal League tomorrow and see what pets they have.

I'm sorry about your grandmother's dog, Erica
As others have said, I am sure she will enjoy the company of other dogs.
