Great idea for toddlers!
I had a serious gardening kick this weekend, as much as I hate it 
And while we were shopping at the nursery, my MIL and I saw the vegetable section and decided we would make a veggie garden for Alex to tend to during the summer.
So, DH built us a raised vegetable garden bed with some wood, filled it with soil, and enclosed it with a fence.
I bought for Alex some toddler gardening tools at the local nursery, a little watering pot and little gardening gloves.
She literally spent the whole weekend outside with me tending to her "garden", and LOVED it. It's such a great, hands-on activity for the toddlers, and something they can engage in all summer 
We also have at home the Vegetable Soup book, which she reads every night, and which is where we got the idea from in the first place, so when we start getting some veggies (hopefully), we'll bring it full circle by making a little vegetable soup together

I was planning on doing this once our new patio goes down, but it may be to late in the season so I might have to wait until next year. I'm hoping that if they grow the veggies they will want to eat them. Lately everything I put on Sarah's plate she will tell me she's allergic to.

 I'll tell you this - they have a veggie garden in her class, and every few months they make a vegetable soup out of the crops, and from what the teachers tell me, the kids gobble it up
