Great website for researching SD's!
greatschools.net
some of the information on NY schools was pretty surprising. some SD's that I thought were not so great turned out to have pretty high test scores. and some SD's that I heard were really good, didn't score as high
interesting!

I totally agree, the district I live in- Longwood gets bashed ALL the time, yet people say Middle Country for example is a good district. Look at the scores. Even in the high school Longwood makes higher marks AND has a medium sized population of kids that are at poverty level! Even with that challenge the high school rates higher than areas with a better demographic. Many of the parent reviews in the "good districts" surprised me too. As I've said many times before almost every district on LI will produce a great kid if the PARENTS do their part. I will say it again, people that don't even have kids yet base their opinion on the diversity level in some cases & thats just sad.

ITA! Everyone I talk to says how horrible Longwood is, but they had pretty good test scores. So did Pat-Med (although I only looked at the elementary schools).

What do you both mean by "innacurate"?

Couldn't agree more. I think having diversity in a school is a good thing. It teaches a kid what books and studying can't. Learning about other cultures first hand cannot be taught.

Some of the statistics were off....or perhaps just misleading. I looked wuickly and it said that the student teacher ration in my district is 13-1....which is waaaaay off! The only reason I could see it being that low is if they were averaging in the smaller special education classes.

Test scores were not accurate, class size and I disagree with a lot of the parent comments about how things operate!

Re: Great website for researching SD's!
That's interesting. I found it to be accurate for the schools that I looked up.
As for parent comments, those aren't monitored so it could be anyone.
Way back when (last year) the site was different and people were accusing faculty members of sabotaging the site with "great" feedback when that wasn't the case.

I think that's a big problem with that sort of feedback - it can go either way.....

Re: Great website for researching SD's!
I think ratio is different from class size because the speciality teachers come into play: art, music, PE, library, reading, special ed, some schools have math and subjects like that in elementary school
