Green Arbovitae or Leyland Cypress?
I need a privacy screening from my neighbors.
I am torn between both plants.
I need something that will reach 12-15 feet. Thick foliage. Evergreen. And matures fairly quickly.
Which one is better than the other and why?
Thanks!

We bought 14 13ft Emerald Green Arborvitaes last year. They are beautiful. They don't grow as quickly as the Leyland Cypress but they are also more compact, Leyland Cypresses can get out of hand.

I prefer Leyland Cypresses because they are a little more full and natural looking. That said, I do have arborvitae along my driveway because there wasn't enough space for the rootball of a Leyland. If you have room, I'd go with the Leyland Cypresses.

Have you considered Spring Grove arborvitae? (although they're not so easy to find at the moment.)

I planted a bunch of Leyland Cypresses around our yard about 5 years ago -- they are HUGE now!

This. We have 12 arborvitae along one side of our yard. They are around 10 ft tall now. They look good, but they look too uniform for me. Something a little fuller would have been a better choice. It really depends on if you want a natural look or a super-manicured look.

Leyland Cypress can get very large. I would go with the Arborvitae. Or look into a tree called Red Cedar.

Re: Green Arbovitae or Leyland Cypress?
we just got 70 Green Giant Arborviate! My DH did the research so not sure why we chose this type, but I know he found a farm upstate that delivered and planted them for a great price. if you need a lot like we did let me know and I'll get the info from DH.
Here are some pics. I only have 2 shots uploaded right now (and my hard drive is full!) but you get the idea. Along top of driveway
Along front fence (they are on the outside of the fence here)

Re: Green Arbovitae or Leyland Cypress?
Leyland Cypresses is my preference. I do not like how arborvitaes tend to turn brown and split, especially after a harsh winter. Leylands are more full and provide a more natural look. I even like the staggered look when using them. Like any shrub- if you maintain them properly they won't get out of hand.

Very true, if you ever notice alot of people have to tarp them up in the winter because they can't take a winter beating. Cypresses are alot hardery but alot of people are alergic to them so be careful.

I have 4 arbovitae that need replacing. They are about 18 ft high. How much are these mature trees?
