Re: Greyhounds?
I have 2!!!! Ask me any questions you want!!! I'm very involved with a rescue group here on LI and when I was living in St. Louis, I was an adoption coordinator for the group there.
Greyhounds, as with any breed, can vary from dog to dog but adoption groups will pair you with a dog that can fit your lifestyle. So, if you want a dog that's good with children, you can get one. The majority of greyhounds are great with children. I had my dogs first and then my son and they have adapted well to him.
Greyhounds are use to being caged for 4 hours at a time. We slowly extended that time and now our girls can be home for 8-10 hours without a problem. It's not ideal but for working families, it's a must sometimes.
Any other questions, just ask!! I never had a dog before and couldn't be happier with greyhounds. If I could have more than 2, I would!!! They are great dogs.

Thanks for the reply. Do these rescue dogs have any special needs? We have many nieces and nephew (starting at age 4) so I would want the dog to be comfortable around kids. Where is the rescue group on LI?

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I was going to suggest you FM myson220
Greyhounds are amazing dogs!
I have an Italian Greyhound (not a mini greyhound - it's an entirely different breed ) . I am also familiar with big greys, so feel free to ask me anything as well!

No problem. I love telling people about greyhounds. They are very special dogs. Some do have special needs but the majority don't. When the dogs come off the track, they go to a foster home where their needs are determined, ie, are they cat safe, good with children, skittish, etc. The foster program is great because you will really know what kind of dog you are getting. It usually takes all the dogs a couple of weeks to come out of their shell. Remember, they've never lived in a house before.
I suggest you get the book "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies". It has great information.
The group I work with is Grateful Greyhounds. Here is their website -
http://www.gratefulgreyhoundsny.com/
They have meet and greets at Petcos and Petsmarts across the island on any given weekend. Actually, this weekend I think they will be at the Westbury Gardens for their dog event. You might want to see if you can get to one of the events so you can meet the dogs in person.
The other rescue group on LI is L.I.G.H.T. (long island greyhound transfer). I don't think they foster their dogs - you get them straight from the track. I think they are cat tested first but that's all. This isn't bad. We got our Sara straight from the track. I just prefer fostering dogs first but that's just me.
