Grieving Your own taxes in Suffolk
last year we used Mark Lewis to grieve our taxes and won a 800$ reduction. His fee was 400$, thats fine.
This year I want to go thru the process on my own, I have seen plenty of documentation for doing this for Nassau county but can't find much help for Suffolk County.
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
TIA

Re: Grieving Your own taxes in Suffolk
What town do you live in? The filing period begins May 1 and runs through the third Tuesday in May. This year since the 1st is a Sunday, you have between May 2 and May 17th to file your grievance.
It's a fairly simple process. Download the forms from the Town website, fill them in, supply your comps or appraisal and submit. There are rules as to how many copies you need to file with the Town and exactly who in the Town gets served (they vary from Town to Town) but you can usually find all the info you need on the Town's website.

beware if you are Town of Huntington. I have heard that they deny 95% of grievances and don't do much until you take them to small claims.
I've tried for 2 years - i'm going to use Mark lewis this year.

Re: Grieving Your own taxes in Suffolk
All Towns/Counties deny over 95% of grievances each year.
When your grievance is denied, you need to take it to the next step and file a protest/small claims petition.
95% of Mark Lewis' grievances also get denied, but he takes it to the next level without you even knowing.... (all tax protest firms do).

I did my own for huntington and will save almost $2,500 a year
but it did require filing the appeal with the small claims court.
I did not have to go tot he small claims court they sent me a settlement offer that i accepted. It was about 85% of what i was asking
the town of huntington gives you all the forms for the initial filing and directions to fill them out and the forms and directions for small claims appeal process called SCAR
i recomend getting an appriasal if that is the reason you are fightingt- i got one for the SCAR and not for the intitial filing

This is true but I've heard that if you are denied ML will advise you that you were denied and that they're moving to the next step.

By law, the Town must notify either you or your representative that you have been denied and give you the option of moving to the next step. Taking it to the next level (the SCAR process) is not difficult at all as long as you follow the instructions and have the proper proof.
