Are you supposed to tip them? Never really occurred to me to tip them but today it looked like the bagger maybe expected $$??

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

No way!

And definitely not at Stop&Shop, where they're on their cell phones most of the time while at the register.

This is their JOB.

ETA: A lot of stores, especially down south, won't let you tip them.

Yes down in NC at Harris Teeter they don;t accept tips and they will even wheel your stuff to your car and help you load it. I have never asked them to but they always offer. It took a while to get used to Chat Icon

Same thing at HT and Publix in FL. I always try to bag myself but they insist on doing so. I decline when they ask if I want assistance to the car. I don't tip for the bagging and more often then not I bag my own groceries in NY. On the rare occasions that someone bags for me, I do not tip.

If they bring the stuff to my car, I do. Otherwise, no. Especially since most of the time it's kids who end up squishing my bread or putting a package of meat in with the fruit etc

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

I grew up in Richmond, VA before coming to Massapequa for high school and they had this store there called Ukrops and they bag your groceries and walk them to your car and are very, very nice. They would not accept tips and to answer the op, no I do not tip because it is very rare that someone at Stop and Shop with bag my groceries and if they do they are on the phone the entire time or talking to the cashier about "smoking a fatty" lol

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

I used to at a Compare Supermarket only because they had a little bucket by the bagger and I always felt guilty just walking by. Don't shop there anymore and don't tip the bagger.

THIS!! To steal a bit from Bill Burr, I don't work at the supermarket, why do I have to bag? I try when I'm shopping alone, but its a lot to manage all at once - while trying to make sure the correct prices are coming up on the screen (there is ALWAYS an error). A pet peeve of mine.

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

I don't. I usually do it myself.

The only time I've seen it is when a little old lady gives someone a quarter for bagging and i always think it's the cutest thing

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

No way, never. Most of the cashiers/baggers give me dirty looks/attitude if I'm not bagging groceries myself! Wow, I'm sorry I'm taking away from your chitchat time, guys-- I have 2 young kids with me that frankly I would prefer to be keeping my eye on, instead of doing your job for you, thank you very much.

Frankly, the only reason I find myself doing the bagging myself (when my kids are not with me) is because the employees do such a crappy job of it! So no.... no tips from me!

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

I never tip baggers. In all honesty, I would prefer to bag the items myself I would also think they are not allowed to accept tips.
