Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

Hell no.
But now I only use Scan it at Stop and Shop so I bag as I go down the aisles.
SOOOO much easier.
I can't shop any other way now.

No way, Jose!

They are performing a duty of their job, and a good portion of them suck the big one at doing it anyway!

Re: groccery bagger at supermarket

At Stop & Shop I use the ScanIt and bag my own stuff. In that case the bagger should tip me.

Nope. I thank them...that's it.

I usually wind up bagging half of them myself. If DH and I go together-which we often do-I unload and pay as DH bags.

I have, though not frequently. If the person goes above and beyond, I don't see a problem giving them a dollar or two..

But then again, DH is in the service industry and he's got me tipping the gas station attendant when he pumps my gas too..

Why would you? They make a salary and it's their job. I tip waiters and waitresses. They make shit an hour and depend on tips to live. That's it. Tip jars are out of control

God no!............and honestly, there is NO way I would tip these moron teenage baggers who as they are piling my cans on top of my eggs they are talking to the cashier next to them while texting at the same time. It's ridiculous.

Personally, I wish they would just do away with baqggers, they are SO useless, I much prefer to bag myself.

Nope! Usually the cashier is bagging.

This is definitely one of my denser moments. It's never occurred to me that someone was standing there as a job to bag groceries. I always assumed they were hanging out talking to their friend and wanted to have a private conversation. I thought they helped get me out quicker so they could tell each other what really happened at the party, etc.

This. Even if there are a few items that are a little cheaper at Waldbaums that week, I will still go to Stop and Shop. Much less hassle.

It might not be a nice thing to say, but it's often true. Sorry to say, but most of the teenagers I see working at the supermarket have a terrible work ethic-- they do more talking/texting than working. The one bagger I actually like at my Stop and Shop is a young woman with Down Syndrome. She has a friendly attitude and focuses on the task, and she knows the "rules" of bagging, so I don't get my bread squished.

I guess its semantics, but she could have easily said that younger kids don't take as much pride in the job and therefore may not do as good a job, instead of calling them useless morons. Hope no one ever calls her kid a useless moron, but I know in her world that that could never ever happen Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

As sad as this sounds, I have contemplated leaving and coming back at a later time when they are all out of scanners on the busy weekend days! Chat Icon I never actually did it, but I did shop without one and then when one became available I'd go down a quiet aisle and start scanning all my stuff at once! (This usually triggers an audit though- I think maybe because you are scanning things out of their normal aisle order!)

But now- they have that scan it app for your smart phone! So if they are out of scanners you can use your phone as a scanner! Awesomeness!!!! Chat Icon

groccery bagger at supermarket

Depends where I shop. When I was a kid, the local supermarket let me bag groceries for tip money only. I did it a couple of hrs after school when my sister was a cashier there.
When I shop/visit my old neighborhood, I do tip.

However, I believe the baggers at places like S&S do get paid so I would'nt tip them.

Nope. Its rare that they bag my groceries anyway. Sometimes the cashier watches me do it. If I'm at Stop and Shop there seems to be only a bagger on the family friendly line. I usually go to that line purposely because I have DS with me. IMO, thats their job.

I grew up in Richmond, VA before coming to Massapequa for high school and they had this store there called Ukrops and they bag your groceries and walk them to your car and are very, very nice. They would not accept tips and to answer the op, no I do not tip because it is very rare that someone at Stop and Shop with bag my groceries and if they do they are on the phone the entire time or talking to the cashier about "smoking a fatty" lol
