Groundhog Day 2021- Punxsutawney Phil
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/groundhog-day-2021-punxsutawney-phil-predicts-6-more-weeks-of-winter/
Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog emerged from his burrow on a snowy Tuesday morning and saw his shadow, declaring there would be six more weeks of winter. Members of Punxsutawney Phil "inner circle" woke up the furry critter at 7:25 a.m. to see whether he would see his shadow or not. ...
I think they should wake him up at 3am just to make sure he can't see his shadow...

Groundhog Day 2021- Punxsutawney Phil
So, I'm always confused about this - is 6 more weeks of winter a long time or a short time? (because my birthday is in about 6 weeks, and we've had some really bad storms on my birthday). If he doesn't see his shadow, then what?

Technically, Spring is in about 6 weeks no matter what. Groundhogs Day doesn't really mean anything.

6 weeks is the worse of the two outcomes so I am assuming they consider 6 weeks a long time!

If he doesn't see his shadow, then it's only 41 more days of Winter...
Since he saw his shadow, we're supposed to have wintery weather for the next 6 weeks. If he didn't, it is supposed to be a mild winter.
Over the last 100+ years, his accuracy rating is somewhere in the 35% to 40% range, so.....

It's "6 weeks of winter or an early spring" so a long time but I am with you in never understanding that. Frankly March usually brings one last resurgence of garbage weather.
Sure, we get warm days occasionally but spring never starts anywhere close to 2/2.
So the whole thing is dumb on many levels.
