group b strep-positive

So I tested positive for group b strep. I know my dr said not to freak out and 30 percent of woman have it, but I'm really upset. I reAd all the things that can happen to my baby girl and I'm so scared.

Anyone have this and have any advice or experiences they can share?

It's really, really common. Nothing is going to happen to your baby girl, because they know you're positive and will give you antibiotics during delivery. Chat Icon

Re: group b strep-positive

I had it when I had my first DS. Nothing major at all. I just had an antibiotic IV and that was it. MY BFF had it when she just had her son, and didn't make it to hospital in time to receive the antibiotics in an IV to treat before delivery (she has VERY fast births). So her DS had to have IV antibiotics for 2 or 3 days, but no big deal! Hang in there! It will be okay, and remember to step away from the google!!!! No biggie. I worked in L+D for a while and we just gave IV antibiotics and the babies did great! My SIL has it too. Both of her girls did great. The cases of meningitis from GBS aren't so high anymore.Chat Icon

Re: group b strep-positive

Thanks girls! I know I shouldnt look on google, I jsut want to be informed.

I read that the baby has to stay in NICU to be monitored if you are GBS positive. Anyone know if that's true? How long do we have to watch for our baby girl getting an infection or something from it? Ugh..I know I shouldnt be scared, but I am.

I go to my dr on Thursday and will ask him everything too..
