Group Homes for Disabled Adults
Does anyone know of one? I'm thinking this could be a transitional alternative for Freddy.
Thanks

Re: Group Homes for Disabled Adults
My mother works for MaryHaven, which runs many group homes, schools & work centers. I believe you need to have a mental disability as well to get into their programs but you could try calling them. Their groups homes are BEAUTIFUL & the staff is really nice. Is your brother a veteran? The Vets have great programs. I have a cousin that is in his late 30's that has cerebal palsy & he just got placed in a group home in eastern suffolk. Was he assigned a social worker in the hospital? They might have info for you.

Re: Group Homes for Disabled Adults
thanks. He has a traumatic brain injury and has applied for SSD. I will give them a call.
No, he's not a vet. The social workers at the hospital don't know about group homes. I would love more info about them.

Re: Group Homes for Disabled Adults
There are a ton of agencies. FREE is one of them. I think it stands for Family Res. Enterprises...... I can't remember the rest. Lifespire and FEGS are two other agencies. If I can think of more I will let you know. I am sure some of them have special homes that separate TBI from MR/DD. I work with adults from group homes for MR/DD in a clinic but I have seen many people in our clinic that are high functioning TBI so I am sure that they belong to one of the agencies group homes. (FREE is the clinic I work at). Fm me if you have any questions. I am going into work tonight so I will ask if they have what you need.

Thanks My Mom is unreal, I'm so proud of her. She started working for MaryHaven about ten years ago as a bus driver, she loved the clients so much she asked to be trained to be a teacher. She now teaches independence classes in the school, then she goes to the groups homes at night & works as a counselor. There are a few of "her kids" that really love her & won't listen to anyone else. There is a girl who doesn't speak & she needed to be hospitalized for 5 days & my Mom volunteered to stay in the hosp w/her over night & sleep in the reclining chair in her room so she wouldn't be afraid. She really does it because she loves it. She's out right now because a client flung themselves on her & she tore a muscle in her leg, but she goes to the school to visit them anyway.

Re: Group Homes for Disabled Adults
All those agencies should have services for people with TBI. I had a friend that worked for an agency that was entirely for people with TBI in LI...I will try to find out the name for you and send you an FM.

Re: Group Homes for Disabled Adults
FREE has apartments and houses for TBI clients (I would NOT recommend them, but you should visit all agencies and houses and make a decision for yourself). DH used to work for Maryhaven and they, too, have TBI programs. There's also Life's Work but they're a pretty small agency and I don't believe they have a TBI program. Also, you could try AHRC and ACLD.
I just spoke to DH and he said he has a list of agencies that provide TBI services. Once I get the info I'll post it for you.
Good luck!
ETA: Long Island Head Injury. I think they're based in Hauppauge but they are specifically for TBI.

Your mom must be a very special person. I did fieldwork at the Center of Hope in Port Jeff when I was preparing for student teaching going back a good 7-8 years ago. I loved it and really saw the difference in the staff that were just there and that truly loved being there with the kids.

he has insurance now, but I don't know if insurance pays for something like this. I may need to apply for medicaid for him and I hope he gets approved. I hear that there is a TBI waiver for medicaid. I think I should contact a medicaid attorney.
