GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
grr! i just paid $70 to have really simple alterations done on a bridesmaids dress- all it needed was a hem and taken in a tiny bit in the boob area. thats IT!! $70! i guess i'm spoiled because my mom has always done all my alterations for me- but she lives 2 hours away now, so its tough. well, i guess now i know to ask for prices before i go somewhere! and at least i like the dress...

wow! and i'm complaining about mine! thats the other good thing- we got a good deal on the dresses, and it was "only" $118, so that makes it a little easier to take! but still! why does the word "wedding" just put dollar signs in people's eyes?!

this happened to me last summer - i spent $85 on the simplest little alterations. i should have been a tailor - i'd be rich!

Re: GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
My friend chose David's Bridal for her BM dresses so that they wouldn't be too expensive.
Dress = $130 Alterations = $115!
The bride went with me for my fitting. The seamstress fitted me, then brought me the invoice. Cups sewn in: $20 (typical); Taking the top in: $30; Hem: $65! I couldn't believe it! My friend felt terrible..she had no idea!

When I got married, I asked them to cap the price of alterations...they capped them at $75 - and then charged $75 just to hem each dress.

This is the same for me. The slightest hem still was $75. I'm in the wrong business!

Re: GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
I hate that. they ALWAYS charge the alteration cap, regardless of what needs to be done. I had only a clasp added to a BM dress once to make it fit more snugly at the top, and they charged me the cap of $85.

Re: GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
I feel you!
My girls paid $60 for minor alterations and it turned out they used HEMMING tape!!!! I was NOT a happy camper.
(The hemming tape was used as a shortcut, I assume, because the dresses came in 2 months late- 1 week before the wedding and this particular vendor overbooks herself )
I'm a bridesmaid in 3 weddings within the next year- its going to cost me a fortune!

Re: GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
Yikes!
Can anyone recommend a seamstress in Brooklyn/NYC for BM alterations, that won't cost as much as the dress? I have a wedding in September.

At least you can wear the dress again? They def jack up the prices a lot when they realize its a bridesmaid dress.

Re: GRR! being a bridesmaid vent!
I stopped getting them fitted at the place purchased. I just was in a wedding this past week. My tailor fitted and hemmed my dress for 14 bucks and I live in Manhattan. The only thing is I wish I thought of this 5 weddings ago

I had the same situation when I was in a wedding years ago. I needed the same things you did, and I told the woman to take the pins out of the dress and I would go elsewhere. I took the dress to the wedding center and it cost me like half of what David's wanted.

That is the best idea ever... These bridal places just look to rip you off- it's really sad....,

this is totally what i'm going to do next time!! i'm short, so i need pretty much every pair of pants i buy hemmed, and i usually just take it to the dry cleaners to get done... BUT, silly me thought that since this was a dress for a wedding, i wanted to take it to a place that specialized in dresses... next time, its all about the dry cleaners! LOL

I found that even my tailors ends up being a lot of money. But if you have a good one, more power to you! :)
