Gym membership dilemma
Dh and I are members of NYSC and we have a 2 year agreement. We are at the one year point right now and I want to get out of my membership because the firm is offering a big discount if I go through them. I also want to switch to Equinox since it's nicer by me and cheaper with my firm discount believe it or not.
The only way to avoid a big fee for termination is to get a doc note saying that we cannot work out. I asked my doc whom I love and he said no. (technically I know he's right) but that totally suks!!! I can also get some proof that I don't live within 25 miles of a club which I can do since I have a property in AZ, but this is BS!

Re: Gym membership dilemma
I was in the same situation, and ended up "selling" my membership to someone on craigslist.org.
Basically, you transfer your membership to someone else, who will continue to pay what you're paying, but is exempt from a "registration" fee.

Re: Gym membership dilemma
I had the same thing. I cancelled the credit card that they billed me on. Then a few months later they started calling my cell. I know this is awful, but I told them that I was deceased. They never called again.

Yikes! You told them you were deceased? that sounded funny...
I am waiting for a call back from them now and I'll let you know what happens.
They may let me transfer my membership to the corporate membership at the reduced rate...as long as they don't lock me into another two years that will be ok. We're talking saving $60/mo! Then after the year, I can switch to Equinox if I want. Right now I have an $80/mo membeship! That's for each of us! I'm trying to cut back wherever I can these days...I'm in saving mode and if my firm offers this big of a discount why shouldn't I take advantage of it?!

and they can post negatively to your credit report! yes they can. thankfully, at the time the monthly dues were only around $20 a month, so it wasn't a HUGE loss.

Re: Gym membership dilemma
I just heard back from the rep at NYSC..they will convert my membership to the firm discounted rate. I just asked them to do it for DH as well. I hope they say yes. I'll be Po'ed if they don't!

Re: Gym membership dilemma
So they said the subsidy was only for employees not spouses. I know for a fact that they give it to spouses as well..that suks!
I asked them to review the policy considering they've done it for others.

Re: Gym membership dilemma
So I got converted over..I'm saving $30/mo! Couldn't get it for DH but his firm may have something too.
The best part about it is that it's only for a year. I could really push this issue considering I've been trying to get them to do this for months now..
Just happy I did.
Thanks all for your advice and listening.
