Gymnsastics for boys ***UPDATE**
So my 2nd grader isn't into sports. He has more friends that are girls than boys. His best friend is a boy, but also into sports so my son doesn't get into that with him. When he's been to some friend's gymnstatics parties or at their house he LOVES doing gymnstatics. He's still early and doesn't know much, but I was thinking it would be good for him. Build his confidence, make him stronger and even make new friends. He's just worried and says no bc he doesn't want to be the only boy. I tell him boys who do gymnastics are so strong and have such confidence. I worry more about him. My 9 year old is into sports and plays with a large group of boys a lot where they all play sports and watch games together. Thoughts? I don't want to push him into anything. He does rec soccer, but hates it and not athletic at all really.
**UPDATE** Thank you all for your help. So we tried a trial class last night and he LOVED it. He was shy at first and when we got there didn't want to do it. Worked out another boy was also new and doing a trial class so that helped. Only 4 boys in the class and the gym coach was a young guy and fun so that all helped. He wants to go back! I am trying one more class at another local gymnatics place next week and this one is coed so we'll see. What is the usual rate for gymnastics classes? I believe it's $20/class and a registration fee so not too bad. It's one day a week.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
DD takes gymnastics and there are always boys in her classes. Not as many as girls, but there have always been a handful each session she has gone. Maybe he can do a trial class somewhere? Our new place lets you do a free trial class before committing.

I would look into free trials. Also look into ninja classes, you do jumping, tumbling and they use the same equipment gymnastics uses.

Gymnsastics for boys
My DS is 7 and been doing gymnastics for 3 years. Our gymnastics center has all boy classes several times a week and they are very popular.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
I know several boys about your sons age who do gymnastics. The train at different gyms but are all on all boys teams. I am sure if you call around a gym near you will have an all boys class/team.
I know at my niece's gym there is all boy classes and competition teams too.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
My kid is very much the same.
He never ended up doing gymnastics but does Taekwondo and loooooves it. He started during second grade. It has a lot of, as mentioned above, physical and gymnastic skills. I look at it as a type of dance almost but then they teach physical stuff too. Everyday it starts with 15-20 minutes of seriously hard gym work (push ups, sit ups, squats, etc). The form to me feels like a dance inspired by fight. It certainly helps with discipline, confidence and strength.
As for other sports, my son is very good at swim and will probably compete in the future. He’s an amazing skier (unfortunately I’m not a fan of ski racing, so we do this recreationally). He also likes tennis. His friend are all into similar stuff. It’s a great, kind group of kids (pretty much all boys). Just no huge sports involvement... but I can see him doing all his sports into adulthood.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
Most gyms offer all boys classes. And if not, they usually have a Ninja class which are mostly made up of boys. Call around, most places will let you do a trial class.
It's a great foundation for anything he may want to pursue in the future.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
I agree about doing a trial class. Also, if he's interested, try and find a place that let's you pay month to month that way you can stop at any time.

My sons friends do Ninja and I want to sign him up once his basketball ends.
My almost 7 year old isn’t into sports either - his 9 year old brother plays EVERYTHING.
Basketball was the only sport he agreed to play. Oh and golf last year. I’ve tried soccer, baseball and karate as well. We just started piano lessons so he would do something but need to find something more social and active.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys
My son is not athletic at all.. he is mart of an artsy kid. Total opposite of Dh and I. lol. He did take to Kung Fu, has been doing it for 5 years.
I tried Basketball, Soccer, T-ball, Baseball, Swim and dance. Dance and Swim may make a comeback. He has asked to be put in basketball. But I am not sure if he is serious. I am not one to push him but if he is going to do an activity he has to take it seriously and not waste my time.
Since your son sounds like mine, maybe golf or tennis. My son enjoyed the enrichment camps he did. He does Spartan races too and loves it, so Ninja classes will may be a fun idea. It just too far for me to go a lot - there is one in Cedar Knolls NJ.
Also my friends sons did Gymnastic, so its like dance where there won't be a lot of boys but there will be some. There is always a boys class.

Re: Gymnsastics for boys ***UPDATE**
Glad he loved it! Our place just closed down and our new place charges monthly. So like $90 a month for an hour and a half class per week.
You can stop or put on hold at any time so if we say dont' want to do summer months we can just freeze it and stop paying until September.
Our old place just charges like $300 for an entire session which went like 5 months. (one hour class per week) They were cheaper but also not as nice of a gym at all.

Gymnsastics for boys ***UPDATE**
glad he loved it!! my son is also in second grade and while he's off-the-wall active, hes just not super into team sports for some reason. our local gymnastics place does an all boys class, too.- hes been doing it for almost 2 years and LOVES it!! sounds like the same as your son went to- its about 5 or 6 boys, and a young guy teacher who is like their "buddy" so they all have a blast getting out some energy.
