Had my first appointment with my RE - Need some questions answered
So I FINALLY got to see an RE today. I met with Dr. Brenner, and I really like him. He was very thorough and seemed very knowledgeable. He took a detailed medical history and explained, in detail, his "plan of action". He did a vaginal sonogram (with the nurse AND intern in the room - fun!) and believes that I do have PCOS (cysts on the ovaries were there still). I am going on Saturday for my two hour glucose test, and on Monday to have blood work done to see if I am ovulating on my own. Here is the plan of action:
If my glucose test indicates an insulin problem (which he thinks it will), then I will start on metformin. He said I can stick with that for awhile and see how I respond with it, but being that we'd like to get pregnant sooner than later, he thinks putting me on clomid WITH metformin will yield better results.
After I get the results of the glucose test, I will start metformin. If I am not ovulating on my own, he will give me provera to bring on a period, and start clomid on CD3 or so. DH will be giving a SA sometime within the week. Initially, he wants to do a post coital test to see how DH's sperm interact with my CM. If I do not get pregnant this first cycle (with timed intercourse) with clomid and metformin, we can then discuss the possibility of IUI (if hostile CM is the problem).
So, I feel better that there is a plan of action, however, this is very overwhelming. I'm nervous about starting meds and the whole process.
What does everyone think about Dr. Brenner's take on all of this? Do you think taking the metformin with the clomid is the best way to go?
TIA

Do you think trying a cycle without IUI and using timed intercourse is a "waste" if I am using the met/clomid meds?

If there is nothing wrong with DH's sperm, you may as well try the "fun" way before getting the drs involved!!!!

I don't think so personally. If nothing else it will give your body a little more time to adjust to the metformin if you go on it. You don't want to shock your body and then end up pregnant. As much as I know you want to get pg right away, if it were me I would allow my body a month or so to get accustomed to the meds. They told us an IUI only gives you like a 20% chance of getting a BFP.

You are right! I just wanted to make sure that it was possible (even if it's a slight chance) to get pregnant "on my own" with the met/clomid. I didn't want to waste a cycle using clomid when I know I'm limited with my usage.

Absolutely!! There are different levels of PCOS. Some people don't have as drastic differences in levels as others. I would definitely try a month w/o an IUI and see what happens!!!

I wouldn't rule out IUI until you get the results of the SA. If there is no problem there, then I don't think it is a waste not to do it.
Good luck!

I agree I did two cycles with timed intercourse on met+clomid.
