Had to turn down an interview...

I met with a school in queens at the NYDOE job fair a few weeks ago and they invited me for a demo. Well I contacted them and I had to turn it down because they are on the 4th floor of a building and have NO elevator.

How am I going to make it up 4 flights of stairs with a broken ankle and being 34 weeks pregnant????

I can barely make it up the 5 steps in my parents house to use the bathroom.

I can't believe they don't have any elevator either.

I was really interested in the school because it was a speciality school. There is no way I can arrange something either.

UGHHHHH...this SUXS

they said to call them when I can walk up the four flights and if they still have positions they will consider having me come in for a demo. but I'm going to have this on for 4-6 weeks, and school will be over so I don't know how promising this will be.

That's annoying of them --- they should make you do a demo on the 1st floor... bring the kids to you.... I'm sorry :(

Re: Had to turn down an interview...

that stinks!!

stupid question - what if a student gets hurt? I thought by law, schools had to have an elevator for medical reasons.

That sounds like it should be illegal or something! aren't they unfairly discriminating against you due to your pg and medical condition?

If a building was built after a certain time, they may not be required to make accommodations. My school building was built in the 50s or 60s and we have no elevator. There is simply not place to put it. There was a child who was on crutches and they switched the classroom til he was able to walk.

Re: Had to turn down an interview...

yea i was thinking the same thing about what happens if a student got hurt.

the school is a smaller division of a school so they only have the whole 4th floor. I think another school has the other floors.

If I student was hurt and couldn't go up the stairs and there was no elevator, they would have to move that student's classes downstairs.

My school is on the fourth floor of a building with no elevator too- it was misery when I was pregnant.

Chat Icon Chat Icon If they have a summer program in the building, you still may able to do a demo- we've had people do that in my school in the past.

Re: Had to turn down an interview...

Chat Icon Do you really want to work for a school that wouldn't make arrangements for a pregnant woman with a broken ankle? Maybe if you look at it that way, it'll be easier to not be so upsetChat Icon
