Hair colored at salon problem

I had medium dark brown hair with blond/caramel highlights and a single color process on top of that to tone and blend it all. So my hair was a very light caramel brown (think Jennifer Lopez hair color). I consulted with her and told her that I wanted to go back to my origional natural hair color (or as close to it as possible) bc I'm ttc and don't want to worry about coloring/highlighting my hair while pregnant. I even showed her a picture of my natural hair color which is a medium dark brown. She says she can do that so I make the appt. So she colors my hair and I leave the appt with VERY VERY DARK BROWN almost black hair. I'm so unhappy with my hair color now and it's nothing close to my natural hair color. I called to complain and she does not return to work until Thursday so that's when I plan on going in to speak to her to see if she can fix my hair color (without charging me any extra). So my question is for anyone who is a hair colorist, , or has gone from light to dark. Is this the only result that I could've gotten??? bc on the phone the receptionist said "well that's the only color you can get when going from a light hair color to a dark color, and you might need to come in to get highlights or low lights to get the look you want. Is this correct or is this BS??? I feel like they are going to try to scam me to "fix" my hair color and charge me extra and I also worry about the health of my hair, I don't want to damage my hair with more color and highlights. It would defeat the whole purpose of why I wanted to go back to brown in the first place. Any help or advice is appreciated. TIA. (In addition - I've been going to this colorist for a year now and she did the light color which looked great.)

I'm not a colorist, but I did work in a salon many years ago...

When your hair is highlighted it becomes very porous and will grab color quicker and deeper- if that makes sense. But, it also will fade faster...

I've gone from light to dark a zillion times and learned to dye it a few shades lighter than I want it...in other words, my natural color is medium brown, but I would dye it a light brown color to compensate for the "grabbing", or I would just do what I call a "soap cap" which would be medium brown with one ounce of shampoo in it...

Anyway, wash it few times and it should lighten a bit...

i am a colorist...and imo a receptionist shouldnt tell you what you can or cannot get kwim?

2 possiblilties..you are just in shock bc you hair is its natural again
or the other...its really isnt close to your natural and it was colored a bit too dark but most likely it will fade for sure! but def talk to the colorist on thurs and dont mess with it until then lol

You are right about both. I am in a little shock bc I went from light to dark and am not used to it at all, such a drastic change. BUT it's also way darker than my natural color. I definitley won't mess with my hair until Thursday. But I was wondering, how many washes before it fades??? ......Thank you to all who responded, I'm not as nervous ater reading your posts.

Ditto to this..

I flip flip from both colors as well (although I'm naturally light haired) and when I go back to dark it's such a huge difference that it takes me a few days.. try and washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo and it'll rinse some of the hair color out.. Chat Icon
