Haircut etiquette question

I got my hair cut on Friday. I made an appt with the usual stylist I go to. When I got there, she was backed up and the owner of the salon offered to cut my hair (it's a very nice salon). So, he cut my hair, we chatted, etc. I made sure to tip the shampoo girl. When I went to the register to pay with my debit card, for some reason, I thought I could add the tip on the receipt - but I couldn't. I looked in my wallet for cash and I only had $4 left. So, my question is -

Are you supposed to tip the owner?

When he was done cutting my hair, he said nice talking to you, etc come back again and he left - went out to the parking lot and drove away. He didn't even stick around for a second. I felt stupid bc I should have made sure I had more cash, but was I even supposed to tip him in the first place? Chat Icon

Re: Haircut etiquette question

IMO.no matter who it is that is doing the cutting....you tip them

just because it is the owner makes no difference.

Etiquette holds that you do not tip owners.

Some owners may even feel insulted when you tip them...

I used to work for a woman who would get upset when people tipped her. She felt that "since everyone knows you don't tip an owner", the tipper must have assumed that her business wasn't doing well.

Re: Haircut etiquette question

YES! I would definatly tip the owner. They are still hairstylists. Just because they own the shop doesnt mean anything. Actually, it means they have more bills to pay.

Re: Haircut etiquette question

I would tip- but since he just drove away I wouldn't stress over it.

I don't think it's necessary to tip the owners -- aside from the ettiquette rule stated above, they usually charge more for services.
