hands in mouth

My 3 month old DS has been putting his hands in his mouth for awhile now. Last night while cooking, I hear a gagging sound, I look over my shoulder and his hand is WAY down his throat and he power pukes his 6 ounce bottle he had an hour before. How do you stop a baby from doing this? When I am with him I play and take his hand out of his mouth but, I am scared of a repeat and him hurting himself.

Re: hands in mouth

make sure he is still not hungry, maybe up his ouces a lil bit. that should do the trick and it if doesnt, he will shortly learn that putting his hand down his throat he wil throw up. they are smarter then we think, even at that age. nothing to worry about.

Re: hands in mouth

DS still does that at 7 months. He is not hungry but he is teething so his hand is always in his mouth.

Re: hands in mouth

I think it's more teething and exploring than hunger. I usually make a 6 or so ounce bottle and he never finishes it.

ITA! DDs have been doing this too - one week they took turns and they each did it once a day. Chat Icon I wish they would learn their lesson! Chat Icon

Re: hands in mouth

My dd started putting her hands in her mouth around this age too and I thought it was teething....unfortunately she didnt get her first tooth until 8 1/2 months...I think its all part of their discovery phase.

Re: hands in mouth

Mine went thru this also, everytime I turned around they would be gagging.
They *thankfully* stopped doing that!

Its a phase, like the other posters said.

Kevin drives me nuts with this! He puts his hands so far down his throat it scares the crap out of me and I use to pull his hand out of his mouth. Now I just let him do it - he has to realize that maybe that finger hitting the back of my throat is causing me to choke like this. Sometimes I am amazed he does not stick a foot in there with his two hands are both in his mouth.

I heard it's just a phase, but it's been going on for months now.

Re: hands in mouth

It's gotta be teething and the exploration of his hands. At 9.5 months DS still does it and he has puked too...Chat Icon
