Happy Chinese New Year!
We're going to a local Chinese buffet tonight. They are having a dragon "parade" through the restaurant tonight.

Sent AJ to school with red envelopes
DS got a red envelope last Friday. The parents of one of his classmates came in and talked about the New Year.

What do the red envelopes mean?
I told DS (4) that we were getting Chinese food for dinner b/c it was the New Year. I told him it was the year of the dragon and he told me, "Its not the year of the dragon b/c dragons lived a long time ago with dinosaurs. Its 2012 MOM".

What do the red envelopes mean?
The red envelopes usually contain money. The older generations give money to the young / unmarried people. It is called "lucky money" or "lay see fong".

I know I REALLY wanted to go to the school and pass out the envelopes myself and read The Great Race Story to the kids. Maybe next year.

Theoretically, if youre married you dont get any more. However you do now have to give them out to younger single people and children.
I say theoretically because my husband's mom still gives us envelopes and so do most of the people we meet. I think chinese new years is the one time everyone gets them tho because I'd give them to people giving them to me.. haha an even swap mostly.

Re: Happy Chinese New Year!
We had a great time at the restaurant last night. For about half an hour, there were three adult parade lions, and one child lion dancing throughout the restaurant. The staff handed out red envelopes beforehand, so we put some money in there for DC to put in the lions' mouths.
