Happy new year, now let me steal your GPS!

GRR!!! DH and I were down on LI for the weekend to see my in-laws and to go to my FIL's annual new year's party. Sunday night was DEAD at our hotel and we parked (stupidly) in the back of the building close to a door by our room. Well, at 5AM yesterday we got a call from the front desk saying that during his "rounds", their security guy saw that our window had been smashed and he had already called the police. The hotel has no cameras on the back of their building so there was no way to see who had done it.

They only stole our GPS which DH takes off the dash but tosses in the glove box. He ALWAYS leaves the arm attached to the windowChat Icon . Soo aggrivating!!

WHen the cop came he said the hot spot is usually at the hotel on Vets highway. Windows being smashed and GPS' being stolen. Had i known about robberies iin this area i would have never rented here

so there's no crime anywhere else, only LI?

Sorry, but that comment just hit me hard.

eta: LI has one of the lowest crime rates in the US, under the national average.

Sorry the GPS was stolen but it could happen anywhere.

I understand why you're upset. I would be too. I just don't think this is fair to say. Crime is everywhere... unfortunately.

My brother's GPS was stolen out of his DRIVEWAY, in Leesburg, VA (not known as a "hotbed" of crime by a longshot). ACTUALLY- if I were looking for GPSes, I would go into the nicer neighborhoods as that's where you're more likely to see them.

Ummm..... not that I would actually DO itChat Icon

Ugh that stinks!! The GPS I bought DH had a notice inside saying to take out of the car whenever we aren't in it, so that's what we've been doing.

I know crime is everywhere....and believe me it's not the only reason we are leaving LI. The houses are too expensive and taxes are going to just go up, i refuse to live in a not so safe area just to afford a house, and i hate the weatehr. I need warmth. but i just can't stand NY anymore

live wherever you want but don't blame your move off of LI on the crime. It's just an ignorant thing to say.

Well then call me ignorant cuz half the reason i am leaving this place is the crime rate and these horrible school districts

curious as to where you are moving. LI has one of the lowest crime rates in the US and some of the best schools.

Somewhere south of here where it is warmer. And yes they do have some of the best school districts, but the really good school districts are in very unaffordable areas for people just starting out, and i refuse to live in a bad neighborhood, or in a tiny house just to afford something, and then there are the ones that are now making the taxes go even higher because they are over spending on their budget by millions of dollars and half of them don't even know where the money went. And the ones that do know where thier money went are cutting some of the programs that are needed in these school districts.

I do hear what you're saying about not being able to afford to live in the best districts -- I teach in one of them, and I know I couldn't afford to send my kids there. But I wouldn't go so far as to call the school districts on LI "horrible" -- that's a pretty big generalization. There are a lot of good areas here (as well as some bad ones of course) -- but you'll get that -- and crime -- pretty much anywhere.

Re: Happy new year, now let me steal your GPS!

We just went through this same thing with our GPS. It was Chat Icon to get the SUV repaired and then the cost of the rental Chat Icon but insurance covered it all. We still have not replaced the GPS but will this month.

The guy at Enterprise rental told us that GPS were the new thing to steal and over 50% of his rentals lately were due to windows smashed to steal GPS systems.....so it happens everywhere and not just NYC or LI.

Good luck finding a good public school in the south. We have friends who live down there and within a year of moving there put their children in private school.

BTW, crime happens in the south. No where is crime free.

But if you dislike NY so much, it's probably best you go. You should never live in a place you clearly hate so much.

I should add that after DH said this, I DID reply with "But dear, this happens everywhere". My sad attempt to get him to cool off. Although, we live now in a stuffy little New England town where our local paper has a police blotter the size of an obituary. Head just 25 miles north and Boston/Quincy/Braintree is filled with crime just like NY. It's everywhere and unavoidable. Just ***** that you never anticipate that it "could happen to you".. Naive, I know.

Re: Happy new year, now let me steal your GPS!

I worked at a hotel and this was VERY common to happen! People would compain that they left their laptop, GPS, equipment in their car and it was stolen.
The people who were stealing this stuff knew what they were doing. People staying at hotels usually have travel equipment and are inside and asleep when they do their thing.
Hotels are not responsible for damage/stolen goods so it's the perfect spot!
Leaving that kind of stuff out in your car in FULL VIEW of people is asking for trouble. It is totally sad that we have to think of everyone as being out to get our stuff, but it's a full target!
