yeah, I kinda know how it works I've seen the softener salt at Home Depot I guess the water passes through it and softens it? We already have a whole house filter but I still see calcification in the toilet, coffee maker, etc.
I wonder if it the process leaves the water more dangerous to drink and such?
I don't think they are that expensive

We are on well water so we have a softener system. We put the salt in once a month and bleech in the system once a week. We have a reverse osmosis system in the kitchen and an RO system that is hooked up to the ice maker. The tap water really isnt that bad and the hook up's outside are connected to the softener so you could actually drink the water from the outside faucets.
The only negative is: you cant water your plants or grass with the filtered water. The salt and bleech will kill them. Which I learned since I killed an aloe plant.
However the well tank has a spigit which you can hook the hose up too and water your lawn with that. For the house plants it has to be bottled water.
One day we'll be on city water

Re: Hard Water/ Water Softener
Thank ladies, my aunt has a softener too and has a well. BUT we do not have well water, Woozle I am in Orange County too but we are actually connected to the town water (not sewer though).
so its the town water that is super hard. We have great pressure, there is a gauge near our whole house water filter but the hot water has had decreased pressure lately and I am thinking that mineral deposits might be clogging traps or the boiler heater coil. So after that issue is resolved I want to try to keep it as clear as possible.
I was hoping the softener would do the trick....

WE just put one in and it made such a difference - our dishes and shower doors don't get water stained anymore. And you can have it set so your lawn gets watered with the hard water and inside the house gets soft water. We used a company called Portasoft - they are in NJ but might have other locations.
