hardwood floors and large dogs
(Yeah, I didn't know if it should go in pets or Home either )
So... will a large dog (Great Dane) completely destroy my newly refinished hardwood floors? My SIL swears that keeping the nails trimmed regularly will prevent scratching of the floors, but I'm not convinced. Thoughts?
The basement is carpeted, but the rest of the house is all hardwood floors. Some rooms will be getting area rugs, but mainly, it's hardwood... and it was just refinished.

Re: hardwood floors and large dogs
I have 2 labs (one over 100lbs) and I have minimal scratching. In fact, I wouldn't even call it scratches, more like slight indentations that can only be seen at certain angles and I believe those happened right after we had the floors refinished because we didn't let the floors cure long enough.

Hmm... we're split here!
Can I ask how often you trim your dogs' nails?
ETA - I'm just curious to know if what my SIL said has any truth to it... not saying you don't give your dogs regular pedicures.

My neighbor's wood floors were destroyed by her Golden Retreiver who weighs almost as much as I do!
This is one of the reasons my DH won't let me get a dog...
They do sell "soft paws" for dogs... here's the link.
Soft Paws
My friend put these on her cat and he tolerated them well!

We never trim our dogs nails. We took them to the groomers yesterday for the first time and they even commented on the fact that their nails didn't need trimming, that they were well kept. (They spend a decent amount of time outdoors running and chasing each other.)

Our hardwood floors seem to be fine and we've been in the house over two years. There are a couple of areas that are scratched but I think they were there already. We trim Misty's nails every two weeks.

Thank you! This was my very next question! Do these work well?
And PS - I see this apparently is more pet than home related... though I fail to see how that is not a toss up.

Re: hardwood floors and large dogs
Labs tend to have short nails - I never had Ebony's trimmed and when I ask the groomer to do Scout's, they tell me he doesn't need it.
So, I never trim his nails and my hardwood floors have no scratches from my labs.

Try keeping them short..I do notice that when they are long she leaves marks so I trim them every couple of weeks. Good luck I can't stand the scratches, I have a Rottie

Re: hardwood floors and large dogs
Our dogs nails only got trimmed when they would get groomed (and only the smaller dog was a on a "regular" schedule).
Maybe our floors are just crap (even though they were brand new say 5 years ago in certain parts of the house and the other areas were sanded & refinished) but they never look clean because they've been so scratched up, the dirt is in the wood.

Re: hardwood floors and large dogs
vin's aunt has three large dogs and her floors are beautiful - she has wood throughout - and has lived there w/ the dogs for years - i always admire her floors - she trims her dogs nails VERY often though.

I agree our floors are fine, and we only trim about 1x a month. I have scratched the floors more then Gus has

Re: hardwood floors and large dogs
Two of my dogs are large dogs...our foyer is the only place we have hardwood and its scratched up pretty good....but I don't think its a good quality wood.
This is something we are looking into now, b/c we plan on doing the floors on the first floor and with three dogs we are not sure which would be a better option for us, a higher quality hardwood or laminate/pergo

Nicole - I have pergo's upstairs and they scratch just as bad as regular wood - good thing about real wood is that you can have them refinished!!

My friend put these on her cat and he tolerated them well! I use these for my Chinese Crested. b/c she has no fur & scratches her skin. I am not sure if they make GD sized ones, but they are very effective.
As far as will it ruin your floor? It depends on the dog. My Pug has ridiculously heavy nails & a heavy gait, but he does not scratch my floor, while my Shiba Inu, who has smaller nails & is lighter will. I am not certain but I think it is the way they walk that really does it.
I do know a woman who has 3 GDs (she rescues) and has hardwood floors in her house. They looked fine to me
