Has anyone adopted a dog from NSAL?
I'm curious about the adoption process, how lon git takes, how it all works, the questions they ask your references, etc.
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks, Jenn

Re: Has anyone adopted a dog from NSAL?
Hi Jenn:
You will need the name of your vet and three personal references. You will need to be ready to take home your dog the same day. They will ask general dog ownership questions, such as have you owned a dog before, if so what happened to that dog; how would you train the dog to go out; what kind of vet care are you prepared for, that sort of thing.
My only warning about NSAL is that many dogs are listed as "Terrier mix." IF you see this be sure to ask them specifically if it is a Pit Bull or Staffordshire Terrier mix. Not that it is a bad thing, but you should know if this is what the dog is mixed with
Good luck & Congrats on adopting

thank you! I heard they're a little strict. We live with the ILs right now, we have a big back yard, my husband and MIL are home all the time (so the dog will be with someone always), but my ILs do have a dog that will be in the house -- she's older and very calm though -- about 10 years old. Is that going to be a problem with NSAL?

Is that going to be a problem with NSAL? It should not be, but they may ask for the dogs vet records or that dog's phone # to be sure the dog is getting the proper care & also to see if the vet has seen any signs that the dog will not be good with another.

One thing to keep in mind is that they will want to call and speak to you referances while you are there. They are very strict about that. Be sure to ask your references ahead of time to be available.
ETA: Are you a homeowner or do you rent? I believe if you rent they will want to speak to the person you rent from.

They are strict. We got denied for a puppy once because or work hrs were too long, they offered an older dog if we wanted though. I would say the process takes at least 3 hrs. Good luck and thank you for considering adoption.

We live with the ILs who own their home.

Re: Has anyone adopted a dog from NSAL?
They never even called our references but make sure you DO NOT LEAVE the waiting room area or make ANY phone calls while waiting - they will assume you were calling your references to give them heads up. They will probably want to speak with your MIL to make sure they are ok with having another dog brought into the home. But shouldn't be any problem that there is already a dog inthe home - We just adopted there in Nov & at the time I also had an 11yr old Dog at home.

We adopted Rudy from NSAL. They do want to make sure you can let the puppy out during the day. They do call your refrences. They called one of ours.
Thank you for Adopting
