Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

from what I have heard, its very painful for the donor to give. I think its a great thing to do if you can.

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

My ex's mother was the recipient of a bone marrow donation from a stranger. I think that the procedure is much more invasive for the donor, and can be painful. I think that any physical discomfort you would experience would be far outweighed by the satisfaction you would get by helping your friend, though I am sure you already know this. From what I remember they withdrawal the bone marrow by inserting a needle into your hip bone - but I could be totally wrong!

My SIL just had to give bone marrow to be tested and they took it from her back with a large needle. She said it's painful but not unbearable.

I always wondered why they didn't put you out for it if it's so painful.
I guess there is a reason though....

But Kudos to you for considering doing it for your friend! Chat Icon

I'm on the bone marrow registry.

To donate, I understand is painful.

To find out if you're a match (and it's a long shot, but not unheard of) is a simple blood test.

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

to my understanding..the area is numbed like a spinal with a c-section.
Local injections and then the marrow needle..
The pain is in the recovery--but not bad-it was described as a fall on your back on the ice or something,.
I am sure u can get vicadin or something for recovery.
I hope u are a match--I cannot imagine how cool it would be to help someone like that.

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

thanks everyone.

i wasnt sure how it all went and i havent googled it yet. thanks for all of this information.

she started to tearup when she was telling me how painful it was getting it the first time.

the thing is that she needs to go move back to australia where she is from because her sister is there and the plan was for her to be the donor.
but if i could do it i would in a heartbeat.

thanks again Chat Icon

I am too. I have been since 1993 when a friend was diagnosed with leukemia. I have never been called. There tend to be more caucasians on the list and therefore if your friend is caucasion, she will have a better chance to find a match. The chances that you match her are very slim, but my friend had 3 matches!

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

My coworker did it last summer and ironically I was talking to him about it today because the last time I donated blood they told me I had a high platelet count and want me to do platelet donation which is done the same way as bone marrow except less blood.

He had 32 pints of his blood conditioned over two days and said it was not painful but physically draining.

ETA: I would be surprised if you would be allowed since you frequently get tattoos ... I know you can't donate blood for 12 months after a tattoo, I would expect the same for bone marrow.

Good point. I'm not sure what their stance is on this- they contacted me last month, and they did ask if i had gotten a tatoo w/in the last year, but when i told them that i went to a malaria spot, they were fine with that- so the rules are different, b/c i cant donate blood again until next january, but i was a candidate for donating bone marrow.

as far as the pain aspect- who really cares anyway, right? it hurts, but the pain typically goes away in a week or so... definitely worth the result.

that being said, i've been contacted twice from the NMD program, but after further blood tests wasn't a good enough match- it will be great if you could help your friend, but it really is a shot in the dark. Chat Icon

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

my dad was not a donor, but had marrow drawn during his cancer treatment.

It is very painful as this huge thick needle is pushed into you and THROUGH your bone into the marrow

I would agree with this. It doesnt matter if the recipient has tattoos, but donors may have an issue for tattoos.

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

I'm not sure about the tattoos with bone marrow, only cuz they do some pretty severe testing beforehand.
It's the match that is the hard part. I have been on the Bone Marrow Registry for over ten years and have never been called. It's very hard to find exact matches.
Good luck to your friend - hopefully she never needs it.

Re: has anyone ever given a bone marrow transplant?

My friend did it - her arm was in a sling for a while, and she developed some weird reaction to it where she lost a patch of her hair!
