Has anyone ever heard of PAYING to take out a library book?
Just went to our town's library. Wanted to look for the new releases mainly some of the Jodi Picoult books....WELL those are considered "rental books" and they are $.25 a day to rent! What is the purpose of a library then? Does anyone else have this in their library?

that is the strangest thing i've ever heard!
I was shocked! I am dying to read some of the books that were "rentals" but the principle of it kept me from paying to read any of them

That's complete b.s., IMO.
There's no way that you should have to pay to take out a book.
What determines if you have to pay for a book or not?

I've never heard of that...
the only time i ran into that was in college when a professor requested a particualr reading of which there was only a few copies of... the library asked for a deposit which we got back when the material was returned.
but a public library... i've never seen that.

That's ridiculous. You already pay to take books out with your taxes and now you have to pay again!! Absurd!

Ive heard of them renting out new DVDS but never books. You know you can go to another library, just show them your card, and then get it for free.

What!? That's ridiculous!
The only time I've ever heard of it was in Stones from a River where the main character ran a pay library - but that was in 1930s Germany

I'm blacklisted from every library in Nassau for a book I took out in high school (I don't remember taking it out). But I still have never head of that.

Paying when you return a book late, yes. But not paying to actually take out the book!

Re: Has anyone ever heard of PAYING to take out a library book?
I take new books out of the library all of the time and I've only had to pay if I was late to return them, same with DVDs.
That's ridiculous, $0.25 a day!!!

Re: Has anyone ever heard of PAYING to take out a library book?
Unfortunately, it's true. Each library is independent and can make their own lending policies.
We don't have rentals at my library, but we do limit the circulation of best sellers to residents only. (although we'll be happy to place reserves for them to non-residents)

Re: Has anyone ever heard of PAYING to take out a library book?
I have to be honest and say I haven't been to a library in about 5 years So I actual have no clue if there are any fees involved in taking out books.
But if there are, that's complete bologna! Isn't the point of a Public Library so you have access to information/books at no cost?

Re: Has anyone ever heard of PAYING to take out a library book?
Yes I have. I work for a NYC library system, and while we don't do that here, I have heard of other systems doing it. The rationale is so the library can purchase more of the popular books and DVDs that just aren't in our budget to purchase, and meet demand.
This option was considered by my system at one point, and rejected since it was felt people would be very unhappy with it. But on the other hand, they are still unhappy because it's nearly impossible to read a popular book while it's popular.
As far as tax dollars, yeah, I used to think tax dollars should cover things like this also, but now that I work in a library system, I know otherwise. I can't speak for libraries in Nassau, but NYC tax dollars basically pay for us to open our doors and have staff. A sliver of this money also pays for our collections, but most of the collection budget comes from other sources, mainly private donations and grants. This money is erratic though, so you really can't plan well or count on it. Also, our collection budget never came back up to the level it was at pre Sept. 11th. When you couple that with rising costs of books, and increased demand for electronic resources, well, our money just doesn't go very far.
Hope this clears things up a bit! I would also ask why they charge the next time you are there and see what you are told. Most library staff are not really in favor of this move, but the Library Board could have had the final decision also.
