Has anyone ever hired a fashion/design student to help with interior decorating?
Weird question, I know...
But I live in NYC and want to redo our living room. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I'd love to get an opinion from an interior designer.
However, I can't afford the hefty price tag....so I was thinking about hiring a design student (seomone from FIT or Pratt...?).
Has anyone here done that or have other cheap suggestions? I've tried looking through magazines but I go on overload... I need someone who can steer me!

Here is a fantastic link for you to look at for decorating ideas. It is called Houzz (we are featured in the kitchen/bath arena); however, there you will see tons of photos and inspiration ideas FREE. You can even browse the site by space and create your own idea book. Here is the link: Houzz.com

I'm a self proclaimed worst decorator!!! I find it easy to do the big stuff...designed my house's architectural plans from scratch and designed my whole kitchen myself but when it comes to decorating and the small touches I'm horrible. I look on HGTV for ideas, they have a great area on there called "rate my space" which are usually people's personal pictures from areas of their house they decorated. It's great to pull some inspiration from there!

You can hire someone and pay them only for consulting services or to go and shop for you or with you..
many of the bloggers for home decor offer their services for verrrry reasonable rates.. you can send them pics of the room.. what your vision is and they will do a design board for you that you can use to shop with.

which service?
to do consulting and to have them shop with you varies.. some offer a fixed fee depending on the work entailed.. some offer a consultation for an upfront fee (varies on whether you use a company or an individual) and an hourly fee... plus if you use their people, they charge a % on top of what it costs you to purchase it on your own (That's how they make their money)(big difference between if you use an interior designer an an interior decorator)
the bloggers usually charge you per room and it's around 50-60 bucks and I've seen upwards of 1-150.. no personal touch but it'll give you tons of ideas.. (good for someone who needs a starting point and has NO clue.. but you can easily scour the internet for pictures of inspiration and create your own)

I buy and return, buy and return, buy and forget to return, buy and return....
Maybe try the YHL mood boards?
They direct you to the products used... That may be helpful.

Re: Has anyone ever hired a fashion/design student to help with interior decorating?
If you hire someone, be sure to ask them directly if they take kickbacks from the places where they take you shopping. I paid someone a flat fee thinking I was going to avoid this but she expected her flat fee and her kickbacks. I caught on when she had no interest in finding things in stores I like, stores where she didn't have a "deal." Then she went crazy whe nI bought a couch without "asking her permission." The idea was that I found a deal and I could later get the couch that fit the design she was doing. In addition, I asked specifically for a functional living room and she kept giving me plans for a "do not touch" room. Now if I want a designer I would go to Ethan Allen, where I know they are working on commission but it's not a secret. Students often work for designers and they, too, can be taking kickbacks. I don't care as long as they aren't hiding anything.
