Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed? Update in first post - I got it done

I have fine hair and I don't want pin straight hair all of the time. I've decided against JHS but I'm leaning toward getting it relaxed.

If you've done this, please let me know about your experience.

Thanks!

Edit: I got it done about 9 days ago and I love it. It's pretty straight without having to put out much effort but if I want it wavy, I can do that, too!

I'm so glad that I did it.

Thanks again to you all for your responses.

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I had my hair relaxed when I was 14. My mom did it from the box for me from the "ethnic section" in the drugstore. It seemed to make my hair less curly. But if I were to do it again I would go to a salon.

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I'm going to do it at my salon because I'm sure that I'd totally eff it up myself.

Do you remember if your hair was more managable afterward?

My hair isn't as curly as yours but I look like little orphan Annie when I wake up some mornings.

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

Without doing this, I would have very thick and tight curly hair naturally (imagine a blonde Diana Ross type hair Chat Icon ). I have been doing this since I was 19. It is the best thing I ever did. My hair is still curly but loose curls. I use alot of products but I comb it through in the shower w/conditioner in it. I have very thick hair though so I'm not sure about how it will work w/fine hair. Where are you planning on going? Let me know if you have questions.

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I plan to go to my salon in Westchester.

And that's exactly the result that I want - looser curls. My stylist said that even though my hair is fine, I seem to have a lot of it and she'll monitor the process so that I won't have the damage/hair loss.

Thanks for your response. I'll probably end up FMing you once I book my appt. Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

yes 2xs when i was 13 then 14

both times it made my hair very dry and brittle
the second time i had a lot of breakage

a relaxer contains a lot of chemicals
you're hair must be really strong to take it

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I relaxed an ex's hair once because he didn't like how wavy it was, and he looked CRAZY afterwards! Wouldn't do that again!

After I get it done I have something called a vegetable dye done. I have some grays so I get mine with color, but I believe they make clear ones too. It helps with the dryness, ask your hairdresser about it. It washed out in 6 weeks. Otherwise I think you can do a deep conditioning treatment, some salons offer them too.

ETA: You want to go to someone who does alot of these. I live in Jersey but I schlep to LI to get my hair done!

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I'm on the fence now.

A lot of people seem to have done it or know someone who did it a while ago so I'll have to call a few salons, I think, before I make any kind of decision.

I do NOT want pin straight hair all of the time so no JHS for me.

Thanks all.

Re: Has anyone gotten their hair relaxed?

I've had it done it a few times (at the salon). I definately think it helped to keep it more manageable when I would straighten it. I have a few VERY curly hairs by my hairline that would always immediately curl up and it helps with that. It also made it less kinky when wearing it curly. Mind you I was able to wear it curly the next day though so it's nothing like JHS.
