Has anyone had a back xray done while pg?
I've been feeling lower right side back pain only when I sleep on my back for the last 4 mths. I'm pretty sure it's that I did something while working out one day bc ever since, I havnt been able to crack my own back by twisting and turning it which I was used to doing. Well, I went to a chiropractor about 2 mths ago and he wanted to take an xray but bc I wasnt sure if I was pg, I didn't let him. Then I got AF but I couldn't get back to the office. Since then, I found out I am pg, but this pain is starting to worry me. I only really start thinking about it when I wake up in the morning, but what if it is something more than just a pinched nerve like he said. He didn't take any xrays and only used a thermal rolling machine to test. I've been reading that having an xray done is very low grade and a very low chance of anything happening, but I'm not sure I'd want to do that. Anyone knwo if there are there any alternatives to radiation xrays? I've heard of digital xrays for dentists, but haven't heard of them for other body parts. Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance Lauren

My dentist does digital x-rays, but I think that radiation is still used somehow--not 100% sure.
I don't know what I would do in your position.
Can you go to more than one doc? Maybe that will help ease your mind.
Or maybe you could go for an MRI or something???? Perhaps that's less risky?
I really don't know for sure, but feel better!

I would talk to your ob, they thought I might need a CT Scan which gives off all radiation and they said if I needed it they could get me one even while pg, maybe they lower the radiation to a minimum or something, I would just ask

I had a head CT scan because my OB made me, otherwise I wouldnt have done even that. I think you def. need to talk to your OB and then go see a spine specialist MD. The spine specialist should keep in contact with your OB and come up with a plan. At the very least, your chiropractor should be in contact with your OB. And in the meantime, please try not to "crack" your own spine. Its really not good for you! Good Luck! Feel better!

Maybe you can have an MRI...they are the safest out of X-rays and CT scans. MRI's have no radiation.

Re: Has anyone had a back xray done while pg?
Thanks girls. I'm going to talk to my dr. on Monday about my back pain. I just don't want to let it go bc God forbit it's something serious. For the meantime, my friend who is a PA in an OB office told me that that dr. in her office said I should 1) not go to a chiropractor when pg and 2) make an appt with an orthopedist. I haven't cracked my own back bc I haven't been able to... and it's a terrible habit so I'm better off :) I promise I'll stop even if I can because this freaks me out!
I'm happy to hear that an MRI might be the way to go if all is safe with pregnancy.
Thanks ladies!

I am an xray tech and you should def not have an xray while pregnant unless the benefits will outweigh the risks...I would def contact your OB. MRI does not use ionizing radiation but where i work you still need to sign a consent if you are pregnant. The side effects of MRI are still not 100% known and we will not scan a pregnant woman unless she signs the form waiving us of any liablility should it arise later on. Good luck and i hope you feel better!

Re: Has anyone had a back xray done while pg?
Thanks Chee Chee. I think I am going to wait until afterwards. I mean the pain is only there when I lay on my stomach and it's nothing I feel at all during the day. Like I said, I think it's something that might be out of place or perhaps a pulled muscle... though I don't know if I would still feel it if that were the case? But you just helped me tremendously.

Yeah right They do make you sign a consent with an MRI because I had to have one not too long ago on my ankle. The doctor said this was the safest. I did get X-Rays in the ER b/c the pain was so excruciating and they had to know if they were broken (which they were) or what. I felt so bad that I had to get it done but I needed to know how to treat my ankles. Believe me when you go for anything MRI included all the nurses and doctors like freak out...so reassuring

Yeah in Moe's case she HAD to find out if the ankle was broken so the xray was a necessity. But just for general pain, i would hold off!! Feel good girls!!
