Has anyone had a c-section for baby #1, but delivered vaginally for #2?

Is that even an option?

Yes it is. My daughter was born by c-section. It was unnecessary & I was very unhappy with it. Then, I had a VBAC in April with my son (I think my birth story is linked in my profile). If you want to pursue a VBAC, my best adivce is to find a care provider who is 1000%supportive & honestly believes in VBACs. I would suggest a midwife as they usually have the highest success rates. My VBAC was an amazing experience & I am so thankful I went that route & that I was successful.

Yes it is.

My Mom delivered me my c-section and my three younger siblings vaginally. As the PP said it's important to have 100% support from your OB/Midwife, so talk to your doc to be sure all is okay for you to do that.

a friend had twins via c section and 2 weeks short of a year later had a VBAC with her daughter (yes, she had 3 under 1 for a couple weeks!)

This is my plan, Christine... I had a c-section in Sept. of 08 and I plan on having a VBAC with DD in March. My OB is 100% supportive and other than requiring that I have a growth sono at 36 weeks, he has no other stipulations (I don't even need to go before my due date, if the baby isn't too big they will let me go longer).

I tried this with #2, but he was also transverse (sideways) so it ended up being scheduled c/s. I was planning on scheduling a c/s with #3, but the NP thinks baby is head down, so now I dont know anymore.

2 docs in my practice told me I can have the next baby VBAC , they didn't seem to think it was a big deal

I am hoping to have a VBAC - my OB said they are very common, especially in the NY area - she said if i were in iowa or nebraska, where they are not done so often, there might be an issue. Your OB who delivered you with your first should really make the decision if it is ok b/c she/he knows about your c-section incision, which i think is the major issue with having a successful VBAC.

You should definately ask. If you are not satisfied with the reason they give you, I would seek a second opinion. Some doctors are just not very supportive for whatever reason & will give reasons that a woman can't do it, while in reality whatever the excuse isn't something that should really stop you.

Yes, it is totally possible. It is very controversial in the medical community however so you should find a doctor who is pro VBAC. The likelihood of a negative outcome is fairly low DEPENDING on why you needed a section the 1st time, and but keep in mind that the risks are pretty serious (rupture, hystorectomy etc). So if it is something you are interested sit down and really talk to your OB about the risks and whether you are a candidate. Some people are much better candidates than others too.
