Has anyone had lymph nodes removed?
My Dad is going in for surgery in a few weeks to have one removed. A while ago he felt a lump under his arm/armpit. He finally went to the dr because it became really large...about the length of a dollar bill and almost as wide as a golf ball. They were going to do a biopsy of it but decided to just take the whole thing out instead. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with something like this and what was the outcome? Thanks!!

I have had several lymph nodes removed. One was right in my arm pit too. The whole procedure was pretty quick. No overnight stay or anything like that. You go in to the ambulatory surgery area, wait to be called and get it done.
I was under general anesthia(sp?). Afterwards, I stayed in the recovery room until I was cleared to leave and that is pretty much it. I took some meds for the pain.. but it did not last long. Honestly, the worst part was waiting in the pre op room to be called.
HTH.

Re: Has anyone had lymph nodes removed?
my mom had some removed due to cancer. she had a double mastectomy at the same time, so most of her pain was from that, not the removal of the lymph nodes. depending on how many are being removed, it does leave a hollow under your arm. my mom finds it difficult for find bras and what not to fit well, but your Dad won't have that problem!
the only thing he needs to be careful of is any infection on that side as your immune system is comprised on the side where the nodes are removed. my mom was also told to never have blood drawn or have IVs put in from the side where the nodes were removed for the same reason (higher risk of infection)
GOOD LUCK to him!
