Has anyone here purchased a real handyman's special before?
I am so nervous- we have an inspector going onsite today. I know it needs work, but I am petrified that there will be structural issues...

yes a couple of investment properties & the house we live in. It had no sheetrock, insulation, flooring, tile, trim, interior doors & barely any electrical when we bought it. However it was only 17 years old so structurally it was in great shape.

I know Meaghan729 purchased a home that needed major work, she's been posting pictures of her progress with the house.

My first house was a foreclosure that was in dire need for lots of help.....mechanical, structural, etc.
As long as you're realistic for what you could be in for....it was a great experience for us. Just sold it two weeks ago!

Yay! Thanks for the positive feedback! We are definitely aware of what we're in for- there's a big potential cesspool issue- but I have the inspector surveying that for me- so other than that... I just hope he doesn't come back and say that the place should be condemned.

Re: Has anyone here purchased a real handyman's special before?
Our house was listed as a Handymans special. It needed major updating and work. We gut the bathroom and semi gut the kitchen. (saved only the cabinets)
It has been exciting and stressful all at once. We still have a long way to go, but it os our first house and we are newly married so we do alot the stuff and we get alot of help from our families with spackling, painting, demolition, etc.

We are very lucky the house was built so well and (knock on wood) have no structural or flood damage.

We had a lot of cosmetic change to be done to our house (carpets, paneling, pop corn celing, fence)... mostly totally outdated or in need of repair/replacement.
I would never buy a house not structurally sound though.
