has anyone installed a tankless water heater or indirect water heater?
We are going to have to save up for a new water heater soon and i am trying to do my research.
if you have one pro's and con's.
Tankless: From what I hear its great except if you need to use hot water for a shower, dishes, laundry at once which i do not know that many people who do that all at once.
indirect water heater: only really efficient in the winter months.

Don't have a tankless yet, but I'd like to look into them as well. Currently, my plan would be to possibly get a whole-house heater, then a separate one for the kitchen. That would handle the dishwasher and sink. Possibly another one for the bathroom on the far side of the house. A few small ones may be better than one huge one.

Re: has anyone installed a tankless water heater or indirect water heater?
we're also seriously considering a tankless. our current one is not performing and is on its last legs.
i can understand the concern about the tankless and doing all of those things at once, but i think those situations are so rare, that it wouldn't really happen. the problem we have now is that if one of us takes a long shower or are doing several loads of wash with hot water, the tank drains and then we're stuck with cold water.

Hey GoldenRod- i heard that a dishwasher uses cold water but has a coil inside it that heats up the water? is that only a certain type of dishwasher?

i heard they are expensive to install but they last longer then conventional heaters and obviously use less energy = less utility bill. It really only saves if you have gas, electric is still pricey.

Re: has anyone installed a tankless water heater or indirect water heater?
We have a tankless hot water heater and have had it for about a year and a half. We love it. The only draw back I find is that it takes a little longer for the water to heat up. When I turn the shower on or the tap on it takes about a minute or so for the hot water to come out. Since you don't have hot water waiting in tank that should be expected. Once the hot water comes out it's endless. No more running out of hot water when we have guests staying at our house!
We've never had a problem running our appliances all at once but then again, we very rarely do that. The other benefit is that if someone is in the shower and someone else flushes the toilet, you don't even notice. The temperature of the shower doesn't change.
Hope this helps.

They all use the hot water from the tap, but many of them boost the temp internally. I don't know the details of how effective they heat the water, and if you could get away with just using cold tap water.... definitely something I'll look into when I buy a new one.

I have to run the shower a bit to clear out the cold water that's been sitting in the pipes overnight already. The 2nd floor bathrooms have even more cold water to expel. It may take a bit longer with an on-demand heater, but even with a tank, there's a delay until the water is hot.

Re: has anyone installed a tankless water heater or indirect water heater?
yea that happens to us with the hot water in the morning and when i come home from work. Its cold for a min or less because its sitting in the pipes and cooling.
AWESOME so happy to hear about someone using the tankless system. We all most purchased a house with it installed (tiny bungalo beach style house) but we were outbid and ever since then i have been really wanting one.
Well we will be saving up for this so hopefully by winter we can afford to do this if not next spring.
