Re: Has anyone successfully used Rosetta Stone?
I started using it with a friend that gets it for free through the army.
we didn't get far b/c she is now studying for the bar, but I loved it. I loved the way the lessons are presented (verbally with visual cues repeated) and how easily you can flow through the program once you get started.
I really want to get i for myself, but it's so expensive, so....I am still debating it. I wish I need it for work or something, to justify the expense

We are doing Muzzy method with DS, but I wanted also to do it for me & DH. The cost is what has prevented us from doing it. A friend of mine did it to learn Japanese for her new job, and it worked really well. Her job paid for it though (lucky thing!)

It is the ONLY one that works. I did it for Spanish, Italian, French, and for brushing up my "formal" Arabic. ONLY one that works....

I would be willing to split the cost with someone b/c I really would like to relearn French.

Re: Has anyone successfully used Rosetta Stone?
I'm so glad someone asked about this. I've been wanting to find out more about it (want to learn Portuguese-DH's family).
How much does it run? Seems like it's worth it!

Re: Has anyone successfully used Rosetta Stone?
I have the French one and I find it hard to use. It's not very structured and I have a difficult time learning that way. I found that I was learning words, but not many useful ones and no grammar skills. I could say "the boy is under the plane" but not "Hi, my name is Amy". Nothing is explained and it didn't hold my attention very well. I also bought the Berlitz system and I like that one. It has great CD's and "flash cards" for my ipod.
My FIL swears by Rosetta Stone and used them to learn Italian and Spanish. I think it really depends on your learning style. I need structure and explanations. I plan to take a class or get a tutor because I'm struggling to learn on my own with either program.

First Generation here - grew up speaking Arabic and French (dad's Lebanese.) Elementary School - took French, High School - took Spanish, and in College - took Italian.
Because I mix them up CONSTANTLY - I felt it best to focus on one (not including Native Arabic) - which will be Spanish!

I'm ashamed to admit the only words I know in any of those languages are food words.

You bring up SUCH an important detail. I was just chatting with Ophelia about this, and I too felt that having a basis from a "class" is the best way to learn. I think RS is for someone who wants to expand their general knowledge and agree it's a bit difficult to start learning from "scratch."
