Has anyone totally cleared their backyard? How much did it cost?
Our backyard is disgusting. It is full of overgrown shrubs and a huge sandpit in the middle where an AB pool used to be. We really want to make it usable this year - and the best way to do it is just to clear everything - the shrubs, grass - everything, and just start over. For the time being we just want new grass - we are hoping to put sod down. Has anyone done anything like this?

Re: Has anyone totally cleared their backyard? How much did it cost?
We removed 40 ft of shrubs (WAY overgrowned) in front of my house. We did not remove the grass.
It was a lot of work. DH and his friend cut everything down. Tried to remove as much roots as possible.
We had to cut everything then back to 4ft and tied branches into bundles. Our sanitation will only take anything up to 4ft long and it must be bundled with ropes/string.
For grass (which I never did) I was told to just kill it with grass killer. Especially on such huge area. Then you will have to wait to seed a again. But if you do it now you might be able to seed again in May when the weather is nice and in time for the Summer.
ETA: Sod for an entire backyard will be $$$$ You can also rent a sod removar/"cutter". It slices through the top surface of the soil removing the grass there. But you will also have to treat your soil for weeds. Just removing your actual grass even with the cutter will not get rid of weeds.

I don't like to use chemicals on my lawn, so any kind of grass/weed killer is out. We were thinking someone would come in with a bobcat and just clear out the whole thing.
We would go to a sod farm and buy/lay it ourselves, which would hopefully cut down on the cost. We don't have inground sprinklers, and only one spicket (which is in the front of the house) so planting that much grass seed and getting it to grow would be nearly impossible.

a relative told me $400 a day for his time but its a relative so not sure about a stranger. Just basically take a cat and tear up everything and go through the lawn and tear up and we would have to rake it out and seed.

FM SweetCin. I know she did this to her yard and I don't think her guy was too costly either. And he used a bobcat to even on the whole yard. She might have posted about it a year ago, but I don't remember. GL!

Re: Has anyone totally cleared their backyard? How much did it cost?
We just had a bunch of shrubs and trees cleared from our backyard. Price depends on how tall/large the trees are, but we had a bunch done for $500 (one VERY large one, which was most pricey).
We used All Island Tree and Fence, call Richie (owner) at 631-431-6182.

Our neighbor did it for $500 plus the cost of the dumpster using his bobcat and a chain saw to get rid of a few mid-sized trees.

Re: Has anyone totally cleared their backyard? How much did it cost?
we had about at 20x8 ft area of overgrown trees and shrubs (maybe 20 ft high also!)
DH and I decided to have at it one day - we went out there with our hacksaws, rakes and trimmers and took about 3-4 days to fully clear out and we simply paid about 130 to rent the dumpster and we were done with it
funny thing is - a few days later our cesspool was full and guess where the cap was - underneath all that foliage - we would have had a real problem on our hands had we not decided to clear it out...
