Re: Has anyone volunteered at an animal shelter
I tried to volunteer at a shelter to walk the dogs but they have a very small window of time they allow it. If you work a regular job it is impossible. It might work nicely over the summer though. I think it is a wonderful idea...I wish it could have worked out for me.

Re: Has anyone volunteered at an animal shelter
nope, and I never will. For one, I'd adopt pets left and right, and two, I've heard horror stories about how pets are treated in shelters, and I'd never do it.
You have to keep in mind that I'm the type of person who cannot even watch animal rescue shows without going into hysterical crying fits.
That's great if you volunteer! They need good people to care for them.

Re: Has anyone volunteered at an animal shelter
I have and enjoyed it very much. THe furbabies were def taken care of.
At times I would feel bad that they were in a shelter, but kept telling myself that they were better off here then out on the streets.
If you are going to do it, look into a no kill shelter. Good luck!!

Re: Has anyone volunteered at an animal shelter
My sister did for North Shore.
She loved working with the dogs - but the administration....not so much. All the paid workers sat around, and did not even the acknowledge the volunteers, who happened to be the ones doing all the work. She left after a few months.
I am sure they are not all like this but NSAL apparently has a real "cliquy" atmosphere - along with tons of $$$.

Re: Has anyone volunteered at an animal shelter
I have many times at various shelters - not always no-kill. It was very rewarding and extremely draining all at once. It was really hard for me to not get upset while there - between the people dropping off their dog or cat (for whatever reason) to seeing the mark on the card that indicated the animal would be put down that week.
It was fun, though, to play with the dogs and cats - to walk them and run them.
