Has being CF ever been an ADVANTAGE for you at work?
I admit it, I have played up my CF lifestyle in certain work situations to get the better position or better assignments.
My current position involve an enormous amount of air travel, site visits, and after-hours work. It also requires the ability to be super flexible. I made sure they knew that there were no children in the picture nor would there ever be any children. I could give this position 110%. I beat out the woman I was up against because she had a small history of not getting things done because of her kids.
Fast foward two years, I'm loving my job and she's getting reprimanded for lying about "working at home" when she was really at Disney World.

I don't think I've used it directly to get a job or assignment but I'm sure to some extent it has helped me in the past.
I've mainly held jobs that required me to travel and work off hours, I'm sure it would have been infinitely difficult had I had children to contend with and I'm sure my employers at the time were well aware that I didn't have any kids so they never hesitated to send me out in the field whenever needed.

No, it's mostly been a disadvantage.
My field is mostly men; the ones I work with have no issues leaving the kiddies home with the wives so it's not that I would get picked over someone else to go on a trip.
What I do get picked for is the overnight and weekend work since I don't have a 'family' to be with on the weekends or have kids to deal with so I can shift my working hours from day to night on someone elses whim.

This really drives me crazy, the amount of time or leniency people get based on their children. I understand their LO's need to come first, mine would too obviously. Just totally not fair that I have to take on extra work load or watch my coworker leave early/come in late every other day with the excuse of their child. Yes, their child should come first, but if that's the case, they should accept a position where their absence isn't going to cause additional workload and animosity with their coworkers.

Ditto. I guess it's the way you look at it. I make more money because I'm expected to cover most if not all OT in my department. But the downside is I'm expected to cover most if not all OT in my department.

Re: Has being CF ever been an ADVANTAGE for you at work?
Its been both an advantage and disadvantage.
Disadvantage: Socially - my office is probably 90% female and run by male/female bosses who have kids. Every year we have our annual summer outing and holiday dinner so everyone at work is always talking about their kids, planning play-dates with other co0workers who have children, etc. Socially it stinks because there is a very strong "pro-kids" mentality/social hierarchy in place and if you aren't a parent, you aren't really part of the "in" crowd here.
Advantage for me because over the past few years, I was able to tackle tasks for co-workers who were parents and needed a helping hand. I got a bump in pay, 2 raises and a good bonus because I am one of the very few attorneys in my office who actually don't take off early from work to pick up kids, and can work on weekends without trouble. In that sense, because I am CF, I am more productive at work which has led to favorable job reviews, higher pay, etc.
I wouldnt have it any other way though, I like my job so I dont mind it.

I haven't noticed any advantage/disadvange for me, but for DH his immediate boss has pretty much said (in not so many words) that because we don't have kids things like afterhours calls/jobs get put onto him. I told DH maybe I should have a fake pregnancy so he can get out of things at work.

When I started out I definitely got the "you can work weekends and holidays because you have no family" crap. Um, yes I don't have family, lots of it, just none that I gave birth to or adopted. I still have to be willing to do this (not holidays) with my current position but anyone who got this position would have to do this. There is no "I can't go this weekend, I'm going to Disney World"

Re: Has being CF ever been an ADVANTAGE for you at work?
It makes no difference at my job. Except for maybe the fact that I don't have to use as many of my leave days as the people who have kids (who have to take off whenever their kid has a day off or is sick), so I can build up my banked days more quickly than they can.

Re: Has being CF ever been an ADVANTAGE for you at work?
When I was interviewed for a job they said "You know if you get hired you will have to go to Georgia for 3 months for training"
So i answered "OK?"
They said, "Well it's hard for some people to be away from their families for that long"
So I said, "I don't have children, and am not having children. My husband and dogs will be fine."
I received a conditional offer from them along with another job where I made sure to announce my lack of children & availability to go train for 3 months (the other job would require it as well) Just waiting to hear who takes me first!
