Has the age limit changed to find a job in NYS with working papers?
My son is 16 w/working papers and has been going around to places to apply for jobs. It seems everywhere he goes they say 17, 18 or 19 w/working papers. At 19 I 18 or 19 I didn't think you still needed working papers. I'm also curious to know how 2 stores (both with the same name, different locations) has a different answe. One will say 16 w/working papers and another store will say 17?
I'm just curious to know if he should even bother continuing or if there is a way for me to find out for sure.
TIA!!!

mcdonalds is 14.
i think it depends on the place.
my first job was Borders, and they werent really into having a 16 yr old work there becuase i would have to leave by 11pm or midnight i forget which due to the law, when everyone else had to stay and finish working.

I don't think you need working papers if you're over 17, I doubt this has changed because they would be considered an adult. This link has the NY State info for working papers.
Someone must be mistaken. Does the store have a website or phone number to get this info?

Re: Has the age limit changed to find a job in NYS with working papers?
The NYS Dept of Labor permits 16 & 17 year olds to work as per the following:
If You Are 16 or 17 You may work in a factory as well as other places.
When school is in session you may work a Maximum 28 hrs/wk:
Monday-Thursday 4 hrs/day Friday, Saturday, 8 hrs/day Sunday, holidays Generally, you may not work between 10 PM and 6 AM. You must obtain written permission from a parent or guardian and from your school, in order to work between 10 PM and midnight on a day before a school day; and from your parent or guardian only to work between 10 PM and midnight on a day before a non-school day. Students enrolled in an approved Cooperative Education Program may work up to 6 hours on a day preceding a school day when school is in session as long as the hours are in conjunction with the program.
During vacations (school must be closed for the entire week), you may work six days, 48 hours a week, 8 hours a day between the hours of 6 AM to midnight.
If you work as a newspaper carrier, you may work four hours on school days and five hours on other days; you may not work between 7 PM or 30 minutes prior to sunset, whichever is later, and 5 AM.
If you work at a street trade, you may work four hours on any school day and five hours on any non-school day; you may not work between 7 PM and 6 AM.
You need working papers for any job except the following: farming, caddying, baby-sitting, casual employment consisting of household chores and yard work in and about a residence or the premises of a non-profit organization and, if a college student, working for a non-profit college or university or for a non-profit college or university fraternity, sorority, student association or faculty association.
Here are the types of papers
At 18 years old, you are an adult and do not need permission to work.

So frustrating. I don't agree with it depending on the place. While I cacn understand they may not be "into it", it, doesn't mean it makes it right. If you have your working papers and are 16, you should not be discriminated against just because you can't stay as late as others. If that's the case then they should say apply for working papers at 17 or 18.

Honestly I called up 2 locations of Dunkin Donuts, one said 16 the other said 17. Same goes for Baskin Robbins, Party City..it's ridiculous. If it's 16, then it's 16, and should not be "conveniently" for them 16 or 17.

Same here. It's a shame. Then they wonder why so many kids get into trouble.

These stores are usually independently owned franchises - They are not required to have the same hiring age policy as far as I know. So yes, it's completely possible for one store to have a different minimum age for working there than another store.

If the restaurant serves alcohol, the waiters need to be 18, I think...

Ok that makes sense then. Still that's annoying. Have you tried contacting his school, I know at my old high school they had a career services office- this is where they would hand out working papers so ask him where he got his- they may have a listing of local businesses that hire 16 year olds.

It's been a while, but when I was in HS I remember places like supermarkets, CVS, Bagel places, etc. would hire 15/16 year olds... but most stores at the mall, etc. said you had to be 17.

I was a lifeguard at 16 -- but for that, he'd have to have started training a few months ago, I think...
My cousin has been working at Christopher Morely park since she was about 16. However, their season already started. I'm not sure if they are still hiring.
I'd also look into supermarkets. They usually hire younger teens.
