Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
WE both have Sirius.
DH got his in summer of 2004, mine was his wedding gift to me in June 2005.
Neither are portable because we have the older equipment but they have more portable models now.
I think it's about $12 a month. They used to offer discounts if you prepaid the entire year and for additional sets. I think mine costs $9 or less a month because it's the second one.
You really have to go by what they offer. One is better for sports, Sirius has Stern, etc.

Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
Sirius - buy it online. They always have specials. It's portable (make sure you get the car kit) and sometimes they have a special where they will throw in the boom box. You can also listen online. The new sporsters all have the playback.

Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
It's all about preference. It's the same as asking Coke or Pepsi? McDonalds or Burger King?
Does it have to be a surprise?
Both services offer online trials, where he could sample the music (if he doesn't have a preference for Stern/Baseball/Football/NBA/NHL/Nascar to push it one way or the other.)
It's a surprise, regardless. If it were me, I'd rather be the recipient of the gift and have the choice of what service I want, instead of being stuck with one that doesn't suit me.
Or, when you want to give him a gift, give him an IOU; let him sample and choose, and then go buy the equipment.
Edited to add: I prefer Sirius. In my opinion their rock stations are superior.

Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
I love my Sirius! I know iluvbo swears by her XM!
You need to look at their individual sites and see which stations appeal to you more. Always buy the stereo, car kit, etc from their websites. They usually offer rebates and a better warranty.
ets: I agree that if you do not love Stern, NASCAR or a specific college football team then it most likely does not matter which one you get. Sirius has Stern and will have NASCAR in January!

I had XM, but we are now switching over to Sirius... I got sick of the commercials on my XM channel.

Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
We love Sirius. We bought the kits online and have it in both cars. Both had rebates and we got money back on both of them.
It is $19.94 per month for both cars. We have it auto-debited from our checking account around the first of the month.

Re: HAVE ?? about satellite radio...
I got my DH Sirius roadster last year, which is portable. I also bought the boombox for the house, which the roadster slips into. He loves having Sirius in the car, but our one complaint is that the antenna on the boombox is really crappy and we have to actually place it outside the house. I got them both at Crutchfield.com and got rebates at the time.
I think the monthly fee is $12 and there may be a connection fee, I can't remember exactly.
