Buying a certified used car is a great option. A used SUV coming off a lease usually has low mileage and is much more cost friendly, that going new.

We did that. We brought a used 2005 Nissan Quest a few months ago. It only had less than $40k miles on it.

Re: have you ever bought a newer used car? opinions please!!
Back in 2003 I bought a used 2002 Hyundai Elantra, the previous owner traded it in and it was practially new to me, low mileage (about 5K miles) and everything with a much lower price than buying new would've been. I loved that car and it served me well into it was totalled in a crash last year.
So in 2007 I bought a used 2006 Jeep Liberty. It had about 30K miles on it already which I thought was high, but that brought the price down. They say you're supposed to do about 10K miles per year, since I don't do much driving I figure it will even itself out in a few years.
Basically when buying used look at the year it was made and how much mileage is on it, that will help indicate the wear and tear. Plus it's a good idea to get the history of the car if you can, either from the seller or online if you have the VIN so you can see if it's been in an accident or anything.
Good luck!

Re: have you ever bought a newer used car? opinions please!!
Getting a CPO'd car is always a good option. You can usually get a very good deal and the cars are still in pretty good condition, besides still being under warranty (depending on how old the car is). Nowadays dealerships are leasing new cars for shorter periods, which means that nearly brand new cars are being returned to the dealers. So the next person who gets the car is getting an almost-new car, low mileage, warranty, and way below its orig price.
I purchased my car for $10,000 less than the original MSRP, yet is was only 1 year old and had only 7K miles on it.
You should consider, when deciding to purchase or lease a CPO'd car, how long the car has been in service. Warranties usually begin from the day the orig owner put the car into service, NOT when you get the car. If you want to purchase the car also keep in mind the cost associated with the future maintenance and upkeep.

CPO'd cars can only be gotten from the dealer.
If you buy a car through private sale, depending on how old it is, you can still get the manufacturers original warranty.

Re: have you ever bought a newer used car? opinions please!!
In 2001 I bought a certified pre-owned 1999 jeep. It had just come off a lease and had only 12k miles on it. The price was fantastic (comps were much higher) and we jumped on it. We had a friend (we call him "The Medic" for our cars) inspect it.
We got the 5 year/60k mile extended warrenty and I made sure to bring it in at least once a year for them to do a diagnostic on it so that I fixed anything before my warrenty was up.
It was and is still in great shape. We did a tune up yesterday and it is running as smoothly as brand new. The only thing we had to fix on it out of pocket was the air conditioning. Otherwise we never had a major problem with it.
It was the best deal we ever got on a car.

My situation was very similar. I prefer to let someone else pay for the initial depreciation.

Re: have you ever bought a newer used car? opinions please!!
i did!
I bought a 2006 Jeep in 2007... it had less than 6k miles on it and I paid much less than original MSRP.
PLUS my 2006 was only originally purchased in Aug of 2006, so it was really only 1 year old when I got it.
It's under original manufacturer's bumper to bumper warranty until the end of 2009 - powertrain for 8yr, 80k miles.
I don't think I'd purchase a brand new car knowing that deals like this exist.

I bought a certified car that was coming off of a lease, and I have never had any problems.
Cars coming off a lease are great because lease holders take really good care of their cars so that they don't have to pay for any damage or stains.

DH bought a GMC Yukon that came off of a lease. It had about 35,000 miles on it and was 3 years old. He got a great deal and we have had no problems with it! I love it because we got a car with TONS of upgrades (DVD player, leather seats, 3rd row seating, heated seats, etc) that we wouldn't have been able to afford brand new.

We buy all our cars 2-3 years used. I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia that I bought in 2005 and a 2001 Subaru outback that I bought in 2004.
We had a few minor problems with the Toyota, and brought it back to the dealership and they fixed it free of charge. Otherwise no problems whatsoever.

ITA with this. Also, if it is the end of a production year, you can try to negotiate for a new model that is on the lot, but for the previous year. So for example right now a 2007 might be left over from a few months ago, but the 2008 is this production year, and the 2009s are coming out soon. So any remaining 2007s will be marked down A LOT, and the 2008s might be too.
Definitely shop around & research.
We just got my mom a certified pre-owned Rav4 & it is great. The extended warantee is not a lot of $$ once the current one expires, and they have been really great at doing minor repairs as she needs them.
