Not sure where
this thread is most appropriate as it
encompasses many areas. Have you fasted and if
so, why and for how long? Did you feel differently, either closer to a god/nature, mental clarity, or to overcome
addictions? Fm me too if you feel better doing that.

As a diabetic, I get a medical pass for any fasting. Even for my surgeries, I can have juices, and I'm always first on the docket in the morning, to minimize how long I go without food.

Good luck with your goals, though! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have a few times for various reasons. I have done a juice cleanse twice and I did the 30 Hour Famine a few times.

For Yom Kippur. I didn't have any clarity, revelations or other. I was hungry.

I was also NPO for 8 days in the hospital. I thought I would go postal.

Oh and yes, the prep for a colonoscopy..clear liquids..fun.

Not my cup o tea...

This!
We go to temple and it's nice to do the collection of food for the local shelter that day.
Then usually I'm hungry by 3 - 4ish and cutting all the bagels doesn't help

i fasted in college for 5 days. only water and tea. i actually did fine, but by the 5th day i had a bad headache and was just plain CRANKY!

did i feel any more enlightened? not really...but i was impressed with my ability to do it, without complaining...even though it started out as a religious fast, it was really a test of my willpower more than anything else

I have been fasting since dinner last night and I can tell you that as of right now I don't have any mental clarity.
As a matter of fact I can't think straight, feel light headed and cranky as shyt.
I am going to go grab a bagel!

I did a juice fast for a week. Some days were easy, some days were torture. I felt lighter and healthier and lost about 8 lbs. I was proud of myself for sticking with it but I wouldn't say I had any sort of clarity that week.

I wonder if the promised mental enlightenment comes after long term fasting. I don't think I can do it but I'm researching it for a project and it's intriguing.

I do see that green juice fasts are best because you will get nourishment.

My DH fasts for Ramadan every year; 30 days of no food or water between sunrise and sunset. It's been rough these past couple of years; the holiday is based on the lunar calendar and it's been falling during the summer. Longer days, hot temps...it's not easy for him but after about a week, he gets used to it. He becomes calmer and more level-headed and feels more connected spiritually.

Same. I fast with DH every year and after the first week it is easier and helps you feel more.connected.

Re: Have you fasted for religion, mental clarity, protest, health?

I have fasted several times for health. I never felt clarity. I never felt anything but pain and suffering. I had an Upper GI done once and had to fast. I had a 10am appt. By the time I got there I was telling my mind that I wasn’t hungry just sleepy. This is what I used to do when I was fast due to finances! LOL. Then don’t you know they brought in 3 dozen warm donuts and two full things of fresh coffee. I wanted to DIE!

After the test I was not hungry (given what I had to drink, bleh)

I ‘fast’ if you will often due to time, money and resources. I won’t eat on weekends. I eat just once. Usually around 4pm. Then not again until Sunday around 4. It’s a habit started from a long time ago when I was too poor to buy food. I got into a habit of sleeping in then keeping very busy until I just couldn’t function then I’d eat but by then I couldn’t eat much. It would hold me until the next day. I used to go to sleep hungry by saying “I was just sleepy”. Those were the days I was 117lbs. Now I fast in the same way due to just habit and being a busy mom. I can’t do breakfast, it hurts my stomach so if lunch is late then there’s no need for dinner.

I’ve fasted for medical reasons so many times I’ve lost count. I’ve become a pro at what I and can’t have as well as when.

Re: Have you fasted for religion, mental clarity, protest, health?

I've done it for a day at a time for religious obligations. I didn't really feel much other than hungry Chat Icon I mean, I was doing it for a reason, so I felt good about that, but it didn't awake any new feelings in me that I didn't already have.

I did the Master Cleanse for 10 days ... twice.

Yes. I felt "cleaner" and toxin free both times.

Re: Have you fasted for religion, mental clarity, protest, health?

My longest fast was when I did the Master Cleanse. It was 14 days on juice. I actually felt TERRIBLE for the first few days.. .then I felt amazing. Then I weaned off with soups and realized I was effing RAVENOUS.

I actually am considering another fast.. this time because I would like to detach from food as sustenance for a bit. I want to see if it has any impact on my meditation.

I worked with 2 guys that did this. We had a long work day, and it was a very busy and stressful job. They were not happy campers, I give your DH a lot of credit.

Personally I have never and will never fast. I have a good metabolism, not gonna mess with it!

Yom Kippour....no didn't bring me closer to g-d. Just the revelation that I'm hungry and bitchy.

I am doing the BluePrint Cleanse, but I can't even make it one day on just juice...so I just have juices all day and then eat a healthy dinner. It has made me feel less bloated and healthier.
