hcg levels going up,but not doubling?please read

my daughter is pregnant, the ultrasound shows a 5 week 5 day old fetus.her last hcg levels were 45,000 then went up a few days later to 47,130.her ob said to come to the office for a ultrasound and if no heartbeat, they want her to do a dnc, because maybe her body is not getting rid of the baby by it's self..my daughter freaked out,she was supposed to go to the ob the next morning, but instead, that night she went to the hospital..the hospital said it's normal to not pick up a heartbeat so early, her levels are rising, she has no piain,no bleeding, the hospital said she should not do anything, but watch and do more blood work and ultrasounds and see if things continue to rise and see if the fetus grows..so the next morning my daughter went to the ob,told them she went to the hospital, this time they said,we'll watch things, and do more blood and ultrasounds next week..has anyone had slow rising hcg levels and had a healthy baby,or does this mean she will sooner or later miscarry?

5 weeks 5 days is really early to see a heartbeat. I don't know enough about hcg levels, but I would wait till at leat 7 weeks to assure that she can see a heartbeat.

The baby could just be a late implanter, or her cycle was different than what the doctors go by.

Best wishes to your daughter! I would definitley just hold out before making any decisions on a d&c.

I unfortunately have a friend in a similar situation Chat Icon

Basically, she (and I would do the same) will wait it out several days and make sure there is no heartbeat and the levels are going down before getting a dnc......

to really expect to see the heartbeat, she has to be at least 7-8 weeks....

Totally agree with Janine. 5 w 5 d sounds really early. We didn't see a heartbeat till week 9. I would not rush into any d&c this early. I wish your daughter all the best Chat Icon

we are not doing anything, whats scary is if my daughter had not gone to the hospital, the ob would have said to do the dnc.but when my daughter gave the ob staff the papers from the hospital, then they said ,yes,i agree with the hospital,we will wait.and ,she has never seen the ob doctor, just a nurse practitioner and her first visit, the mid wife,so i told her next week's appointment and ultrasound see the ob,so she has an appt with the ob doctor.so she has to wait 1 week,do blood work to see the levels, and her ultrasound and appt are together..she had a miscarrage in the past..i'm trying to help her the best i can.i have never had a miscarrage.this daughter is almost 20,i have 3 other daughters 14,16,17 yrs old and my son is 7 months old.

at 5W5D with #s that high they shouldn't really be doubling anymore. plus that is WAY too early to see a heartbeat! i would definitely have her wait a week or two before making decision. lots of luck to you and your daughter Chat Icon

Ithink the docs say that too damn fast, IMO. Thats why I respect docs that wont even see you until 7-8 weeks. Many prayers to your daughter I hope everything works out this time!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

wait until 7 weeks and/or get a 2nd opinion from another ob/gyn or RE.
my levels were no longer doubling after I reached a certain number and then I saw the heartbeart. That is the tru test. seeing the heartbeat. I saw it at 6 weeks 1 day. GOOD Luck and get a 2nd opinion before u do anything.

I hate to say it.... if it were me, I'd change Dr's! No OB should be expecting to see a heartbeat so early on.... It's a sign that he may be glossing over things, and not paying a lot of attention Chat Icon

good luck Chat Icon

As AP said once the numbers get above 6,000 they double every 3-4 days. Her rate is slow but not unheard of. Wait and see I woudl suggest. As long as the baby is in her uterus there is no harm in that.

I had this happen twice myself. I would also wait a drop longer. I would also make sure that a D and C is absolutely necessary. I had a chemical pregnancy that ended on its own at barely 5 weeks and the second m/c was at almost 7 weeks - also on its own. A D and C is a medical procedure and as difficult as miscarrying naturally may be, I would still prefer to have as few procedures as possible. JMO.

I am glad that you are there for her support. She needs you!Chat Icon

Re: hcg levels going up,but not doubling?please read

Back in Nov. I was in the same situation. I was 5wk 5days as well and had just started having a little brown discharge. I went to the dr. and they took blood. My hcgs were going up but did not double. My dr. did not do a sono because it was way to early to see anything. After 3 blood tests they basically told me that it was an inevitable miscarriage. I decided to wait and see if my body would do it naturally and it did. 2 weeks later I started to miscarry.

I hope this is not the case with your daughter. I just wanted to share my experience. I will keep your daughter in my prayers! Chat Icon
