He just turned 4 and cannot hold a pencil correctly...
I am getting very frustrated. Johnny had ZERO interest in ever coloring/drawing until recently.
Now he is coloring in pictures (not staying within lines so great, but i don't care about that as much..).
I bought him a workbook to begin writing. Simple things like connecting dots, lines etc...
I feel really bad b/c I got so frustrated w/him. But he has no clue how to hold a pencil or crayon. He still grabs it with a fist. If i try to show him the right way, he walks away and cries that he doesn't want to write...
Is this something that comes with time? Did anyone have success with methods of helping this age learn to at least hold a pencil correctly?? His teacher wants them to be writing their name within the next few months. We aren't even close. And most of his friends can write their name already..
I normally don't freak about these things, but its really bothering me....

No real advice, but I remember being in kindergarten or 1/2 day kindergarten - so 4 or 5 yrs old, and I didn't hold pencils correctly either. I remember having to use a corrective "pencil gripper" thing.
I just googled it to find a pic for you and there are a few different types now. One that actually "holds" your fingers to the pencil. Maybe it is worth a try?

Thank you! I will check that out!
Seems like such a silly thing to get frustrated about...but I think i get more frustrated at his laziness. It's terrible. The second you want him to just TRY something, he runs away and says "i don't want to..". At least if he tried, i'd be ok with it!
