health (sanitary) question (especially for those of you in the medical community)
This is sort of an in-law vent b/c my ILs were just here for a week and this is something my FIL does constantly and I don't know if its just irksome to me or an actual health hazard. So I'd love it if any of you nurses or doctors out there can weigh in . . .
my FIL is diabetic and has to give himself insulin shots everyday. The trouble is he leaves syringes and bloody tissues in our family bathroom (not only in the garbage but on surfaces) and our regular kitchen garbage whenever he does it -- so we are talking about 3x/daily. After a week I felt like I was seeing blood and needles everywhere!
I really wish he'd keep this sort of waste separate (ie in his own garbage and then take it out to the trash), but I can be a bit of a germ-a-phobe and I don't want to pick on him if its just my neurosis. Our DS is only 3 months old, so its not like he's going to be picking these things up now, but in future he might.
Should I tell FIL to keep him stuff out of the family bathroom and kitchen garbage?
TIA

As a nurse I will tell you that it is totally unsanitary what he is doing. You cannot throw needles in with your regular garbage as a matter of fact it's illegal. Needles must be properly disposed of in a sharps container and dispoed in a medical waste facility. There is usually a schedule you can inquire about with his local hospital or doctor's office to dispose of them. So yes tell your FIL you will not put up with this disgusting habit of his!!!!!

The needles that my DH uses for insulin shots have no sharp part exposed after they have been used for one injection. At any rate, he was trained in proper disposal when he first started on shots. Can you give your FIL a dedicated container for the purpose of disposal? Would he use it?

My father is a diabetic and he has a sharps container in his house to discard the used needles.. When the container gets filled he goes to Plainview hospital to dispose of them and they give him a new container...
