Healthy School Snacks
DS will be starting kindergarten and since he is my first (and only) child, I am clueless.
The letter we got in the mail said the kids are to bring a lunch and a separate snack with drink box.
I would prefer DS to have water with his snack and a drink box with lunch but maybe I will switch the two.
Anyway, what kind of snacks do you pack for your DC? And how much?
Thanks!

Re: Healthy School Snacks
I always pack fruit for my kids classroom snack, except on Fridays when they get cookies or chips.
I think you're right to send water in for snack. Kids don't need sugar from a juice box at snack time.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
Last year we were asked to bring in a large snack the first of every month. I brought in things like crackers, goldfish, alphabet cookies, and granola bars. If I was able to to send it daily, it would have been things like crackers and a cheese stuck, fresh fruit, cut up celery and carrots, granola bar, mini bagel.

Thanks! I knew fresh fruit (DS will not eat raw veggies) and a string cheese but I wasnt sure if those individual cracker/goldfish packets would be enough.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
I'm pretty sure when they got goldfish they would get a small handful, so an individual bag would probably be even more then what they got. If they got ritz crackers they got like 4. my son also really likes cereal bars and 100 calorie bags of cheeze its or cheeze its party mix.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
I'm pretty sure the "drink box" just really means a drink - including water, if that's what you prefer!
ETA: I will be sending in fresh fruit for snack everyday ... e.g. whole apple cut up, strawberries and blueberries, clementines, watermelon, grapes, etc.

They probably mean a drink in general. They might also figure that the juice box is easier to open in case some of the kids have trouble with the cap on the water bottles. I would send water if that is your preference! Certainly healthier than all the sugar in the juice. I know for DD I would consider sending in a soy milk box (she is allergic to milk) because it has more protein and I find she does better when she has some protein - so her snack will probably be fruit (grapes, banana, melon, apples etc) and water or a soy milk box.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
My child gets a drink and snack with lunch and then a snack and drink for later on.
I like the little packets of goldfish or cheez its. String Cheese, apples, bananas, blueberries, grapes, carrots, celery, popcorn etc. I have to admit I KIND OF feel bad b/c I know other kids have tasty junk and my kids would rather have that, but dont let them.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
Oh and Im a mom of an 11 and 6 and 3 year old :) I think a great idea is in the summer before school pack them a lunch and show them how to open it and open the snack bags etc so they can practice. If I know my son will have trouble opening it I might start it for them. You never know how long they might have to wait for help from a monitor.

Thanks for that advice too!

Re: Healthy School Snacks
Also, just an FYI but the thermos water bottles are GREAT. DD had snack in the morning last year and I would always send her with a full water bottle of ice water. She would drink it throughout the day (I strongly encouraged her to use it instead of the water fountain in the class room )
I always knew when it was a hot day as it would come home empty. On the days she didn't drink it all, there would still be ice left in the water bottle when she got off the bus. Keeps it REALLY cold for a long time and dishwasher safe.

So true! I use snack time for conferencing and when I have to open yogurt containers and fruit cups and all these packages, it doesn't get done. I don't allow fruit cups in my class anymore. too many spills and its sticky.
You would be amazed at what some parents deem healthy.

Love the Funtainer drink bottles! I hadn't thought of packing just plain water in it, I think I'll do that. We don't plan on sending juice boxes in, I was going to do mini bottles of water, but this is better.
As for snack we'll probably do string cheese, crackers, apple slices, etc.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
I send in water for snack and chocolate almond milk, or a juice box for lunch. I would send in the reusable water bottle but another child on the bus was always trying to take it, so I switched to the throw away bottles.
I just stocked up for snack. I'll be sending in angry birds teddy grahams, regular teddy grahams, cheese-its, homemade muffins, sun chips, pretzels, goldfish, etc..
I don't send in any "snack" with lunch... only fruit, maybe yogurt, and whatever he's eating.

Re: Healthy School Snacks
I always sent a "dry" snack...pretzels, goldfish, Veggie Straws, Gerber Yougurt discs, Nutrigrain bar. I was always afraid of fruits leaking out of the container and making a big mess. When they go into class, they have to put all their lunch boxes into a big crate, and their snack bags into another crate. So I never did anything that might leak. And I'd send the Honest Kids juices for DD, but this year I told her I was going to send her with water instead. She is fine with that. For lunch I send her with a milk box...she had lunch at 11am and I packed her lunch box at 8:30, so it was still cold enough for her. This year for snack, she's willing to take a Gogurt, so I'll add that into the mix. I'll freeze it and then it should be good by the time snack comes.
Find out what time lunch and snack are and then you can determine what to send. Also, they aren't given a lot of time for snack, so you have to figure out what they can eat in about 15 minutes.
btw...after sending DD with pretzels for about a week, her folder came home with the cutest note, in her handwriting, "Dear Mom, I don't like pratzls". It really make me chuckle, and I saved it!

Re: Healthy School Snacks
Also - another PSA - don't stock up on too many snacks too early. Last year, DD was in a Nut free class - which meant not only nothing containing nuts, but also nothing processed in a facility that also processes nuts. A lot of the things that I would have sent her with she could not take for snack.
Lunch was different because there was a nut free table that the kids with allergies could sit at.
