Heart rate during cardio?

What is the goal? I thought it was over 100, but when I started at the gym last week and go my HR over 100, I really didn't feel like I was working that hard. Anybody know how high you need to get it to really have an effect?

Re: Heart rate during cardio?

For me personally, I like to see mine over 150...that is when I really break a sweat. If you are just starting out, I would take it easy though bc you can get easily winded and light-headed if you go too hard.

Are you walking or what type of cardio are you doing?

Re: Heart rate during cardio?

For fat burning you want to work at 65% of your max, for cardio (strengthening your heart) it's 85% of your max.

An easy formula would be:

220 - age = Max Heart Rate

Find 65% of that, and 85% of that, and that's your target range.

If you google it you can get even more specific with it and use more complicated calculations.

Here's a general guide: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/target_heart_rate.htm

I follow that for fat loss. When I'm in the right zone, I don't feel like I'm gonna die but I do sweat and breathe heavy.

I try to be around 155-165. I do intervals to get it up then bring it down again.

do you have a heartrate monitor? You can get close to your true max by running a teeth clenching 5K and using the top number as your max.

The formulas don't work for me (220-37 is 183) and my max heart rate is over 200.

a different way to think about it:

easy (65%) can you speak in complete sentences?

medium (75%) do you have difficulty talking, but can say broken sentences?

hard (90%) you cannot talk.

This seems about right for me. I'm 28 yrs old and the max heart rate is 188. When I'm doiing heavy cardio, my heart rates is usually around 187. If I do intervals on the elliptical, its usually around 160-165

My bet is that your max is even a bit higher. It is very difficult to hit your max unless you are injected with a certain drug or you run teeth to the wind, empty the tank, have absolutely nothing left sprint for a decent distance.

Mine seems very high - Im at 185 usually. Am I running too fast? Maybe if I keep it lower it'll help my distance?

can you talk? how much? I can get up to 188-190 doing tempo runs or intervals and I usually try to sing some of the music playing to get me through. I think it is probably 90-95% of my Max HR. If you can utter a few words, but not in any sentence - you are probably hitting that 90-95% mark.

Don't think it about being too high. There is no rule or anything that says that you shouldn't be a certain number. Someone on my running MB said that they found out theirs was 221 during a doctor's procedure and they run a sub 3:30 marathon!

I should have said that the max was based on that calculator that someone posted. I don't really know how accurate that it. It basically asked for your age and gave you heart rates based on the level of activity.
